IMO, you can get buy with 4 X 4 X 2, but if you can go 5 or 6 feet high it doesn’t take up anymore room and it gives them alot more climbing area. A six foot viv gives you the opportunity to put in some really substantial branches. Avanyu now measures 3 1/2" across his belly and needs a pretty good size branch to bask on. I have interwoven all of the climbing vines I used when they were smaller and braided three lengths of rope together where I used to have just one. If you are building, it’s best to plan for a 36" by 4" beast (LOL). BTW, if you are thinking of having a male it’s best to have 2 females with him.

Ok now I’m really confused, not that I wasn’t before , but on Tricia’s site doesn’t she say that you want the length of the tank to be double the length of the water dragon? Everyone’s been saying taller is better than longer so I’m really confused. The big tank I was planning, for my water dragons when they’re full grown is tall too, but I was going to be making it long too...

Bigger is always better! If you have the room make it as large as you can accomodate. If you look at the furniture in your room and house you’ll see that most items are only 24" deep or less. I felt that having something deeper than that took about too much room and upset the uniformity of my home. Water dragons are arboreal and if given the opportunity will spend much of their day basking in tree branches. They also sleep in the branches in the evening. Therefore, IMO height is the most important feature of the enclosure. Width is dependant upon your preference. You’ll need enough floor area for a large water source (pan or pool) and if you have females, enough area for soil or a laying box. I think you need at least 4 feet of width to provide this. Since CWD are 75% tail (very flexible tail) I think the "times 2" rule is a little excessive. Make it as big as you can but keep in mind that you have to provide adequate heat, UVB light and moisture to your end product. Even with a viv as small as 6’ x 4’ X 2’ I have humidity issues.

I like my long tank and its only 2ft high but its enough to keep Merlin happy and sometimes he or my bassie would jump off branches and I’m afraid that if I had my tank to be like 5 or 6 feet high then they would just jump right off a branch and break there bones...Merlin jumped off of my shoulder once and he fell a good ways because I was standing staight and I’m 5 ft 8 1/2, but he was okay thank goodness, I was soo scared I thought he would have a broken leg and everything.

The tank I’m building now is only 2’ tall because Isfet is only about 7-8" and I’m planning on getting another small one about, hopefully or I’m not going to be able to get one, Isfet’s size. After quarintine in Isfet’s old tank it’ll be able to join Isfet in the new tank. After that I’m planning on building a 6’x4’x6’ tank, assuming I can fingure out how lol

Not sure if I’m late in responding...I haven’t been in here for a while! Anyway, I just want to point out that most arboreal animals go side to side, not straight up and that is where the length becomes important. I think if possible it should be just as long as it is high and that’s for any arboreal animal.

Sorry if I misinformed. I thought arboreal meant tree dwelling. Mine climb to the top of everything in my viv. When they come out, they climb immediately to my head. In the viv they have many branches and vines and seem to use them all at various times. My temperature gradient is set-up so that the lower temps are at ground level and as they go higher the temperature increases until they reach the basking areas where it is highest.

It is tree dwelling, but in nature they would go side to side as they go up is what I mean, not just straight up.

LOL I understand! Tricia’s viv is same size as mine (6’ x 4’ X 2’) and she says on her site she wishes she’d gone 6’ wide. I have placed many cross positional ropes, branches, cholla sticks and artificial vines across the 4’ width and they do jump from thing to thing as they climb to the top. I can’t imagine heating another 24 sq. ft. of viv. I’m already using 2-6 outlet strips as it is! Glad you posted. I don’t want to give incorrect info to those who want to know something.
