Water Dragon Help For New or old owners

If you have any questions about water dragons, I have had a lot of resque animals and a lot of my own. I have different reptiles too and have a great reptile guy for questions that I don’t really know about. Post any questions and I will help to the best of my ability.

Babyangelb30, my WD is sheding for the first time ... he/she just started sheding ... and his skin is getting wrinkled, looks like he is dehydrated, or loosin wieght (which i don;t think he is doing, is eating well) ... but i just went and baught a humid-o-meter (dun know right word) and its around 80 all the time .... could he still be dehydrated ... or is it just because he is starting to shed ...

Thx for your help Jake

I’m not sure what you mean by an overbite, because most lizard’s jaws fit together much like humans and they have somewhat of an "overbite" but if you are really concerned, post a picture so that I can get a better understanding. As to the only eating when being hand fed, sounds like he’s just being lazy. Put some superworms or whatever kind of food that won’t get out of a dish in the cage (in a dish of course) and don’t hand feed him until he eats them. Don’t starve him to death though, if he dosen’t eat them within three to four days (whenever he starts acting really hungary, if mine don’t get food when they want, they start just eating things in the cage)then hand feed him and I would recommend taking him to a herp vet. Hope this helps!

Do you have a big water dish for it to soak in? No matter if the humidity is high or low, if they can’t soak in water and "wash off" the shedding skin, or to just soak water in their skin, it WILL get dehydrated. I soak my Water Dragons in the bath tub for at least 30 min. a day in water up to their chest to make sure they get adequate soaking time. Make sure you don’t leave them unattended in the tub too long though, they might fall asleep and drown especially if they are sick. (Personal experience)They won’t like the water at first, they have to get used to it. After being in there for a while, they’ll start swimming around and cool stuff like that. Use lukewarm water as to not put them in shock. Hope this helps!

Put in some live plants and use a mixture of peatmoss in the soil. Put a dish under the pot with water in it, and that should help with the humidity, an airstone in their water dish also helps.

The humidity isn’t as big of a deal as you’re making it. It is a big deal, don’t get me wrong, but it dosen’t have to be high as long as they have a water dish that they can soak in. My husband’s female water dragon was in his grandmother’s care for about 5 years and all she had was rocks, a few logs on the bottom and a large water dish. She didn’t worry about her except to change her water and to throw food in there. We have her now, and she’s just fine. They will keep themselves hydrated with the propor water dish. A fogger is a good idea because they do come from a humid climate, but if you are in a place with high humidity when you’re used to a place with low humidity, you won’t have an easy time breathing either. Just think of a lot of things like that and you should be able to figure most of your problems out that way. Hope this helps!!

Centikid

What temps are yor running your WD’s tank at? Usually when a dragon has it’s mouth open a lot it’s a sign they are too hot - It’s called thermoregulating. Just like they’ll sit under their heat lamp to ger warm, they’ll pant (mouth open) to help try to cool off.

If your temps are correct then your WD may have something wrong with it’s mouth,.. but it’s usually them temp which is the problem.#

Hope this helps.

i run at around 90-94 during the day with a cool spot of the tank at around 85. At night it gets down to around 80. Also Its just neo that does it but he does have it open an awful lot. Trinity seems fine though. Could it be mouth rot? his mouth doesnt look bad what are the symptoms if you know them? Thank you for the help.

Hey there .. i was right ... it’s too hot for your baby.. it needs average at around 84.. dropping 5 - 10 degrees of a night time. It neesds to be lower of you’ll cook the poor little guy.

Is your heat bulb running on a thermostat?

You’re welcome my friend.

Thermostats can be pricy (sorrY I don’t know your age or money situation) but if you have light/heat bulb You need to get a "dimmer-stat". If you have a ceramic heat bulb you can either a dimmer or a normal "on/off" stat. If you can’t get a dimmer then i suggest you get a ceramic bulb otherwise your WD will look like he’s got a disco going on him his tank and this will stress him out. (learned that one from personal experience with out Bearded dragons ;o)

No offence was intended .. because of your username I wasn’t sure. I hope I didn’t offend. A dimmer is better if you can get hold of one ;o)

I was looking a baby WD’s today, The shop owner is going to order me a female from the breeders .. I can’t bring another male home, Killer would never forgive me.

Good luck with your two, Let me know how they get on with a lower temp.

PS I just looked at your profile, you’re not in Maryland by any chance are you??
