 Appetite in WD

I believe that my 16 mos. old WD is healthy, but it doesn’t seem to eat much. It will not eat from my hand unless VERY hungry so I have been putting crickets, earthworms, waxworms and mealworms in my vivarium. They disappear, although I have found a few earthworms under the food dish. Is it eating enough? It is a beautiful green, sheds every couple of months and swims and plays in the cage. I have a 75 gallon aquarium with ecco-earth, live plants and trees, a 4 gallon crisper pan for a swimming pool with a waterfall unit above the pool. Any suggestions? When should I begin using pinkies and can I put them in alive like I do with the other food items? I put cricket food in separate little dishes and the crickets gutload themselves as necessary.

it sounds healthy enough if you are putting food in and its disappearing it must be eating it it is old enough to eat pinkies don’t know if you can feed them live as its illegal here and anyhow I wouldn’t feed live as they say they can bite and I really see mice as pets it doesn’t seem to bad when I feed them dead but could’t bring myself to feed them live I feed mine by holding it with plastic tweezers and shaking it about and they eat them no problem hope this helps a bit

Thank you for the response. I looked at your pics. Your WD’s are beautiful! Their habitat is also wonderful. You have spent alot of time and effort making them comfortable. My Drago is growing, but it will not eat if I dangle food. My daughter’s WD (Agua-female) eats from her hand but my will not unless I starve it! We are hoping mine is a male. We would like to raise a few babies! Drago’s characteristics appear female however, we are reserving judgment for a few more months.

First thing has your WD been checked by a vet for parasites? pin worms, giardia etc.. I also have a 11 mos old baby girl and she is exactly the way you descride your WD. I found that she likes a big variety of things (silk worms, super worms ) but will only eat a little at a time or every other day. I also leave a bowl of greens and a fruit in their cage and they pretty much munch on it in the early morning before the heat light come on.I think that the girl WD are much diffrent from the males. at least its that way here. Hope I helped you a little . GOOD LUCK

I have a dig. camera but my new Toshiba doesn’t have a floppy drive. I am going on vacation for a week, but I will get a good close-up and post it from work week after next when I get back.

No I haven’t had it to a vet. But I purchased it as a hatchling-very small with 7 other hatchlings from the same mother for sale. It has always been very healthy. This morning I dropped several earthworms and a couple of waxies in the cage and I actually saw it eat some of them. Usually they are just gone when I get home. One good thing about letting the crickets roam the viv is they clean up any garbage (dead skin, etc.) lying around. I also do not let Drago out very much (except to swim in the bathtub when I do the cage). I have an old cat who is very interested in the WD!

Drago seems to prefer them also, but I know that they are not the best food source. I don’t consider my WD skinny, but it definitely does not look like some of the beautiful WD pics posted on this website. My daughter’s WD was approximately the same size and weight at this age and at age 2 1/2 has now filled out nicely and lays about 8-10 eggs once a year so I think mine is healthy.
