 Weird food option

well after observing my baby water snakes they are eating somthing weird. I feed them plenty of minnows and they eat 1 or 2 of them but the things like like more are turtle sticks. I feed my turtles the turtle sticks and the water snakes have a couple of them as well. im just making sure if this is ok or not if its not ill do seperate feedings or somthing.

That’s weird, but cool. At least you can get your to eat something. I’m just trying to get my Northern watersnake to eat anything at all. I think it would be Ok b/c the stuff that’s in a turtle supplement is like ground up fish and other things that both of them would normally eat just in a convenient little pellet. I don’t know for sure. I’m not an expert on watersnakes eating turtle food or anything but I think it should Ok. Again don’t take my word for it.

I would try to keep them on a natural diet...them eating the pellets is very odd but since nobody has experience with them actually doing this i wouldnt advise it

If you’re still planing on letting them go in the pond at work, I’d make them keep working for their meals. Reinforcing a cptive snake’s hunting instincts enough to make them competitive in the wild is challenging enough as it is.
As for health, what are the ingredients? If the sticks have a lot of vegetable matter in them, then their nutritional value for a snake is limited. And if they’re all meat, you can probably shop around and find a better pellet for turtles. Interesting that they like them, but not really the way to go.

man some people just dont read the full post. The snakes are on a natural diet this was just somthing i noticed out of the blue. the turtle needs the pellets but for some reason the snake likes it i dont encourage the snakes to eat it but they do anyway

No, I read it. I know that you give them minnows. I was simply commenting on the fact that if the pellets are nutritionally balanced for an omnivore then it’s not good for snakes to be eating them. Especially snakes that are supposed to be learning that food is sneaky and hard to catch, assuming that your intent with them hasn’t changed.

Problem solved then. Could have gotten really interesting if a turtle decided it wanted to start nibbing on the same piece a snake was swallowing...

i have no idea but for some crazy reason during feeding time the snakes go right near the turtle to feed on the minnows and the turtle dont even take a nibble i tried to get a picture of one of the snakes basking on the turtles back too

You say you have a well balanced eco system so there will be no problems

and you also say you have kept them together for years where the snake in the picture doesnt even look 1 year old...

seperate them because the turtles will eat ur snakes...tryin to keep you from grief in the future

and dont challenge me on what i know on watersnake...or u can go ahead and do it idc really you think you can keep them together no problems and the truth is alot of animals live together for long periods of time with no problems but in the end bad results happen due to these animals see each other as natural enemies in the wild...

1. In most well balanced ecosystems problems do occur but arnt very sever problems and are easy to fix

2. work has kept them like that for years turtles and snakes together even small turtles with large snakes also the snakes and turtle i have are both babys and id say a year before they are ready go back into there own ecosystem

3.not going to happen bring all the grief you want i stand firm each time prove my points and move on

4. you must have not this post really clear only minnows go into the pond for fish also you know how many care sheets i have read over the years to get this perfect Jackasp has helped me alot too everything is running smoothly

listen you have any more concerns keep them coming i have awnsers for anything

speaking of which i have good news on the set up i got a huge power unit with 2 uva lights and a uvb 24 inch strip

Okay dude wat ever but when ever that little turtle get interest in your snake dont say i didnt tell ya so

and you say problem can be solved quickly...honestly if the animals plan on eating the other you cant solve it unless your staring at them when they do it cause truthfully iv never seen a turtle who wont attempt to eat sumtin even when they are stuffed....not in their nature to let food to pass up

if this is true then why is it for the couple months i have been doing it and the years my work has been doing it how come they havnt nibbled on them since. the turtle is big enough to eat the snake but he doesnt infact it doesnt even seem interested in the snake even when i put minnows in the water the snake goes in to catch them same with the turtle still doesnt even go for the snake. see your worries on the problem arnt much of a worrie if i didnt think it was right i wouldnt have done it. Plus i think it also depends on the turtle. red eared sliders I wouldnt have any doubt that they take a nibble on the snake however painted turtles like the one i got seem to do quite well with the snakes.

snakebite4 said that his work place has been housing snake with turtles for years...not these exact water snakes he has rightnow. Then he said that HE PERSONALLY has been caging these waters with his turtles for months.

There is a difference

Im done with this thread if your not willing to listen to somebody who knows more then you on the topic then you obviously wont care when things happen....gl with them and cant wait till sumptin finally happens rofl

Painteds are different? they both live with snakes in the wild and they both see each other as food in wild..not a big difference i might say

And if you havin been doin this for years how come you only mention these snakes and turtles living together we dont see any others?

I love this sentance right here how do you know you know more then i do we have never met this is the first time i have herd of you even on here i dont get it how do you know more then me frankly the way i see it its that people dont know more then other people thats not a challenge you want to make. What you do is give opinions like you did but i came back with an opinion of myself. we learn we dont know more we learn. who knows maybe im wrong o well its a learning experience who knows you could be wrong too its a question of time. Obviously you dont take in any of my points of view in you rmind you have its set that the turtle WILL kill the snakes. How do you know this? Can you read through my computer into my room and through the mind of my turtle? And is he saying that he will kill my snakes? NO i dont think anyone has that power the way you learn is through time. I still think though in my opinion that specie mixing is a stupid thing to argue over when in the natural world every specioes in the world is mixed

ok i like how you say they are all mixed..yes they are mixed but in the wild a turtle attacks a snake...the snake has plenty of space to escape when in a cage there is limited space to go

I dont care if you wanna test me on the things i know go ahead and the reason you may not have seen me here is because i left this forum for wat 2 years?

Hey, how often do you feed your watersnakes the minnows? I remember when I kept one for around 6 months I only fed it every week or sometimes I would go 2 weeks inbetween feedings. ....but when I did feed it. It would eat up to 10 minnows at a time. I finally let it go in the river but I kinda worried about it since it was fall and I wondered if its instincts would kick in enough for it to survice and know to hibernate since I’d boughten this snake when it was a baby from the pet store.
One more question for you guys. What’s the best way of catching a water snake in the wild. I’ve shot some with a 22 rifle but they never let me get close enough to catch them by hand. Don’t worry I don’t shoot them anymore . . . that was when I was younger. Now I’d like to catch a few because I have a small pond that I like to introduce some water snakes to.
