 Black northern?

I was frogging and I saw a black northern water snake.... are melanistics common? It sure was beautiful but it was fast and I have heard about how bad it hurts... so I didn’t risk a bite.

I’ve never seen a wild black northeren.. but a few weeks ago a female that i rescued. gave birth
and produced i beleive to be a melinistic... it is darker than all the others.


this is an older photo

but the o ne in my hand is really dark

and much darker now

We get them in Ohio, although I’ve never seen one up close that didn’t have faint patterning. They’re black like black leopards are, not like black Labrador Retrievers.
