 Handleing my Checkered Garter snake??

I got a checkered garter snake from the wild this summer and I haven’t held it at all. All though others have, I’ve been scared. Now that I feel I can, everytime I touch him to pick him up he takes off to the other side of his tank. Do I just pick him up and hold him or take baby steps, touching him more and more then finally picking him up. I’m just afraid he’ll bite me. He’s so fast, I want to react in time. He seems to like his new home (been in a 10 gallon tank for about 2 months now). He eating two small pinkes a week now, he was eating just one but it looked like mid week he was looking for food again. Ang suggestions on how to go about handling him?

If you totally afraid of getting bit...

Put your hand on one side of the tank flat and move him with the other till the crawls on ur hand...then gently pick him up and let him rub between ur fingers

Worked for me on my aggresive snakes

the fright is worse than the bite-with garters;they almost never make you bleed-but water snakes are way more aggresive and make me bleed. just a few bites a day. i’m not scared of the biting any more after you get used to it.if you want to pick up your garter don’t be scared and just pick him up.if you are scared to death then don’t pick it up after you feed it;the smell can get on your hand and they will mistake it for prey.also try some toads and fish for food as a good varied diet.
