 Who has been bitten by a Northern Water Snake

Can you tell me how painful it was...I have been bitten by a red corn snake,honduran milk snake,Carpet Python,and a Garter Snake and so for the milk is the most painful.

But im very curious about NWS bites. I heard they bleed ALOT! (Becuz of the enzymes in there mouth that stop blood from clotting)

yeah, i got bite by mine..but shes just under a foot long...so it didnt hurt nor bleed...but it felt like a bunch of small sewing needles going into your skin slightly..but i dont know about a big one..i heard its painful and its hard to stop it from bleeding..hope this help(doubt it didnt)...

on a scale of 1 to 10 id put it as a 6 or 7 with a full grown adult

they have longer teeth adn sharper teeth due to thier diet which consists of slimy prey which needs extra stuff to hold on to

it will bleed profusely(sp) since they have a saliva which makes the blood not able to clot so easy

sorry to bring up an older post but,



the first one is a 40" NWS. the second one is after i got a bit careless,lol.

it didnt hurt that bad, it feels similar to licking a 9Volt battery. it tingles, and yes, it bleeds, not that bad, but if you let it drip, it will drip for a bit.

I have been bitten by them a few times.It didnt hurt at all to me but it did draw blood. I have been bitten by a 5 foot black Rat snake but that didnt hurt me either for some reason.

I was bitten by lots of northern water snakes and garter snakes also. No big deal. But a bite from a good sized python or boa is serious buisness. The latter have large teeth.

Most non-venomous colubrids don’t give really bad bites - at least in my experience. Sort of like getting a real bad scratch in a thorn bush.

I have been bitten by mice and hamsters - now THAT hurts!!!

I’ve only been bitten once when I was camping at six years old by a mocassin. That was thirty years ago I don’t remember much about it except I don’t want it to happen again. My rats though have sent me in for stitches a few times, usually around four. So don’t go screwing around with mama rat(LOL).

hey i just caught a water snake thats like, umm... maby 10 in. and it bit my bro 2x and he said it didnt realy hurt, but it drew alittle blood, but we are keeping it so do you think it will bite in the future? its semi agressive but only when it wants to be put away.

I’ve been bittten by water snakes plenty while herping, its not too bad at all. They do bleed a lot though. I would just be sure to wash the bite well and take some sort of measures to prevent infection.

They don’t have the cleanest mouths in the snake kingdom.

I got bitten by mine once. It bled a LOT but Really it was more surprising than painful. Yes I have a scar but I would put it at a about a 5 out of 10 on a nonvenomous snake bite pain scale.

yes, as you can see from my name, i love them.

i have been bitten by my banded water snake which is just over 26 inches. that can be painful.

but my northern water snake was only a foot long so her bites didnt hurt as much.

Well.... There is a local river that I tend to go to. every once and a while i will spot a water snake... And since im well me i go after it... When i first catch it it bites.. usually strikes twice and then holds on.. i just try not to think about it.. it bleeds alot but looks worse then it feels. after i catch it and it knows theres nothing it can do it will relax and i will handle it everyday. and for me as long as i handle them everyday they have never tried to bite me since.

Some people are saying its painless, or very little, but the big guys hurt.
I went out about a year ago to a waterfall, and at the bottom there were tons of nws’s I managed to get ahold of one roughly 5 feet and a good couple of pounds.I was holding it away from me by the end, and at neck hight it could reach low enough to bite me in the ankle (never wear sandles while going out looking for snakes) well, im 6 foot 2, and when it bit, it actually hurt uite a bit, and bled for a while. Id say you should jab yourself with a lead pencil, until it breaks the skin, it was like that. however, the pain does not last.
