New baby alligator...need info I’m not gonna say what you heard was wrong. I would think a free air cage with the right temps and humidity would be better than a box with little air movement. I doubt it would take 10 years off there life span. That doesn’t sound right to me. but we’ll leave it alone and agree to disagree.
I have one Iggy in a box like your set up and one in a cage if I had to make a decision from daily observation I would say the one in the cage is happier and more active. Just my observation

New baby alligator...need info ok, if you mist often the igs should do ok. could the air movement possibly carry scents through the cage making the wire ig stimulated? im not going to argue with you, i havent had an ig in over 20 years, so your observations>childhood (0-7 years old, it was my dads) memories

New baby alligator...need info Its very cruel, VERY cruel to underfeed an animal. They are still growing if you underfeed them. They are not getting enough calcium and other dietary needs for them to grow. Which wil cause muscle and bone problems! You obviously do not know anything about the growing body of anyone. You shouldnt keep a corcadile or alligator or any animal that is suppose to be 10ft+ because they are SUPPOSE to bwe that long, if you cannot keep an animal of that length get another type of animal. Why keep it inhumanely like that? For your dirty human needs to keep an animal like this?! It shouldnt be 2ft in 6yrs, suppose to be healthyily 5ft+ for 5yrs of age, feeding it scraps every day or one good meal every week is good, but why stunt its growth? If you cannot have an animal that reaches 10ft plus then dont get one!!!

New baby alligator...need info OK FOR STARTERS......To the person who started this thread....I am so terribly sorry. You have just signed your self up for years and years and years of backbreaking work, MONEY out the A$$...risk....and well u see everyone elses opinion. This isnt meant to flame your questions.....BUT i own an alligator and understand some things you may not. I purchased my alligator when he was 2 years old and 2 feet long. I was 15 years old then. NOW my gator is 4 feet long and 5 years old. I am 18, recently graduated highschool, two jobs, and on my way to Penn State this coming semester for BIO. I do agree with the rest of you’s that gators arent for kids. I was a kid when i bought mine, But if you knew me Im not anywhere close to your average kid. I dont like sports, or video games, or most other kids. I Slave away at my two jobs for 60+ hours a week to maintain my pets, gas, insurance, and college. Theres on thing people dont understand when buying any sort of gator or croc......and that is this: You are not buying a "pet" you are buying a showpiece. Gators are display animals....not pets. THey can tollerate you but they are not tame. I think a million years of being wild predators will stick in there little brains way better than there few years as "pets". When you buy an alligator....your not just getting an animal. Your Changing your life. Honestly, believe me...ive done it. They are a HUGE responsibility.....and I am DETICATED....you have to be or else you will fail and make the reptile community look more horrid to the public than we are already portrayed.....My gator has heated land heated pond regular food regular handling, vet checks, the works. He is a male, wild caught as a hatchling from the Fl. Everglades. He is my passion, my life, and i bend my schedule to accomidate him LIKE I VOWED TO DO BEFORE I BOUGHT HIM. you should do the same. Pets are like children not house plants!!!! There is so much involved in doing the bare minimum....imagine what it takes to be a true dedicated reptile conservationist and enthusiast! or...in the words of a certain hero of mine....a WILDLIFE WARRIOR. My sugestion to you is read up...and ask yourself is this really what you want. When he gets big....youll be attatced to him. and then your stuck. So plan wisely. Thanks for listening to me!

New baby alligator...need info Does anyone else have an utter feeling of helplessness that they can’t go to these disgusting pet owners’ houses and take their poor animals from them? I feel truly sick at the moment, I can’t believe any human would buy a wild animal, deliberately underfeed it and make it cold, just because they can’t handle it. If you can’t handle it, why the f do you have it?
Christ, I’m so mad. I think I’ll go and throw my snake at the wall for a while - after all, letting out my aggression is obviously more important than her health because I’m a human and she’s a mere animal.

New baby alligator...need info WOW how sad, people like you deserve to be eaten by the animals you keep, i work at a crocodilian rescue center in canada were we get caimans alligators and crocs, that are abused malnurished and kept in bathtubs and laundry tubs, people as ignorant and irresponsible as you make people like me sick, for the good of your own animals read AS MUCH AS YOU CAN about how to care for them, and in the future, research prior to purchase, thats just common sence. hopefully your animals will be taken away from you

New baby alligator...need info wow, you read the wrong books, take it from some one who knows alligators, worked with them for over 30 yr, gators in the wild eat every day, in 5 yrs your gator will not be 10 feet, not even in the wild, my 5 ft gator is 8 yrs and 50 lbs, what most people don’t know is to keep small rocks in the tank as they will eat them as a chicken does, in the wild they eat small rocks to digest foot, snakes don’t eat every 2 weeks, they digest about 10-12 days and will eat as often as they can, you want more info just email me
