but I have toads about the size of a house fly and i feed them black ants because they arent overly agressive and dont pose a big threat to the toads and if it wont eat the toad is probably stressed so try not to touch it as much. |

If you already have a toad, and your to attached and really want it as a pet, the simple solutions to feeding the animals are: 1.) First method, the one I use, is to catch a variety of: Crickets, (If your toad is about 1-2 inches, find larger ones... marble size, etc.) Leave them live or else the toad WILL not see them and therefore, will NOT eat them, which wil result in death. 2.) A method I have tried, without very much success. Swat a couple flies, using a simple fly swatter. DON’T: Hit the fly to hard. That will result in this method being a total waste. Make sure the flies wings, legs, etc. are still in tact, and then, very carefully tie a lock of hair/sewing thread to one of the flies remaining appendages. Gently dangle it before the toad, and do your best to make it look like it’s flying. The toad will eventually notice after a bit, and to make it easier to catch, either stop swaying it or set it on a rock (Somewhere where the toad will notice it and where it’s actually visable) And, if your toad notices, he should eat it. 3.) "Mealy’s" AKA Mealworms, are also a good way to feed your toad. Be sure they are alive, and dump them somewhere where it’s not wet... Mealworms breathe through their skin, along with alot of other types of worms, and will drown. I don’t reccomend buying them from a pet store, unless they are still alive. You will find live ones in most local pet stores, along with the occasional live crickets, which I do strongly reccomend if they are available. 5.) Some large toads are known to eat the common earthworms, but I have heard nasty things about them eating through the lining of the toads stomach and feeding on their intestines. I proved that theory, along with the ones that say mealworms do the same thing, wrong. Considering worms can live while cut in half, if you intend on using this method, I reccomend you try cutting them in half before you jump to whole ones, just to see your slimy friends reaction. I do however, reccomend you do not feed smaller toads worms, because it would be a rather large portion for them to digest. 6.) I have heard some rumors about pet store toads eating fruits or veggies... This is also false. Toads are carnivors, and rely on eating bugs or other smaller toads/frogs. Please, please, please! Do not try to feed your toad veggies or fruit, because your only going to kill it. :Notice: If you do happen to catch a toad, DON’T put it in a bucket/box of any type! If you plan on keeping toads, give them a home you know they’ll survive in. I happen to have caught 14 toads at my dads work once, and within one night they’d all died because I kept them in a box. This was quite some time ago, and I never intend on doing it again. I currently have 2 medium sized toads living in a 14"x8" Aquarium. I basically just dug a hole in my backyard while the ground was wet, and took some mud to plaster into the bottom of the cage. Toads /love/ rocks, so if you plan on keeping them, I suggest you put some rocks in aswell. Anyways, I plastered the mud so there was a small indent in it (Eg; The size of about a soccer ball.) And filled it with RAIN WATER. Tap water will kill them, I’m pretty sure, unless your willing to find out. I then placed rocks, plants, and other things into the cage by sticking them into the mud. It’s not the greatest, but it improves every day. I’ve had my toads for 2 months now, and they seem to have over come their anxiety. Another thing: Toads are not like snakes!! Do not keep them in a warm area. They enjoy cool, shady places where they can hide. Well, I hope this guide has been a big help to all of you, and may your toads live long like my toads, Olly and Fry. - Akaska |

Fruitflies are rather expensive to buy in the vials, and it takes a month or so to get Hydei culture growing. It takes less time (2 weeks) to get a melanogaster culture going. I found that these fruitflies were only available online. It cost me about $30.00 per week to buy them until I could start my own cultures. So, it is best to plan ahead and get your cultures started if you are raising tadpoles. Pet Smart sells crickets and mealie worms. I found the crickets (they did not have pinheads available) were too big for my frogs to be able to eat. The mealie worms however, (50 to a container) for about $3.00 worked better. You could pick out the smallest mealie worms first, then when you know the toad is eating well, try a bigger one. I have not had any problem with feeding my greenfrogs live mealie worms (with heads intact). My green froglets are about 1/2 inch from snout to rump. I notice your initial conversation occurred six months ago, in the summer. I am writing on January 1st, 2008. People will perhaps be looking at this note during the summer when again there are frog and toad babies in need of help. Good luck to everybody with their amphibian adventures. Also, I encourage you to check out the frogwatch USA site. This cooperative venture between USGS and National Wildlife Fund allows anyone to participate in an amphibian research project. This is a great opportunity to learn about frogs and toads in your area and to recognize their calls. You’ll know what kind of frogs are breeding at different times of year, and sometimes you can do the actual observations right from your porch at night. Here in North Carolina we hear spring peepers and Copes Grey Treefrog calls right off our car port and when I walk the dogs down the road, I hear Fowler’s toads and American toads in the trees. Very Cool. Good Luck and happy froggin’ New Year! Also, for help with maintaining tadpoles check out this website, http://www.windsofchange.net/archives/009526.php |

they DO NOT eat them nor need to eat them... they are CARNIVOROUS animals... you feed fruits and veggies to the feeder insects that in turn will be eaten by your frog. i hope, for the frogs sake, that you are not feeding him or your feeder insects anything high in citric acid? and why are you wanting to place food in a frogs mouth? they can eat just fine unassisted. |

Anyway, let nature take it’s course! When I was a kid, My friend and I would catch this toad, (Sylvester one eye) who came around every summer, for years! Yes, he had one eye, and was a grown toad. We would set up an aquarium (Just for the summer) and would throw him night crawlers in there. It was the coolest thing, watching him just grab it with his tounge. Anyway...it was just a temporary thing, and we would let him go every time, and he would come come back around, every summer. He was awesome! Tonight I found a baby toad, while feeding my sparrow....who is sitting on eggs. I set a tiny aquarium up , just for about 2 hours. It’s so cute, and I just want to "Observe" once again. It’s so tiny, so I am monitering it’s every move right now. I will let him go back in the woods, in about 30 minutes.....but it was fun, to at least feel like a kid again. No way I can keep it as a pet....it just wouldn’t be fair to him, but yes...you are right gretchen........never make something eat!!! It can do it on it’s own, and god knows, what you may be trying to do, may kill it! Let Mother Nature, take it’s course! Thanks for the reasurrance! :)
