I have a hovabator - can anyone give me pics of theirs and how they have their sandwich tubs in them? And I will get a thermostat but is a thermostat the same thing that gives the heat or does the hovabator do that by plugging it in. I will get a good thermostat and a good thermometer. Do I need both. This is where I get confused...My main problem has been regulating temps and the right amount of moisture to the perlite/vermiculite - any tips or suggestions?? I should probably get a scale too, huh?? Thanks Kim |

Mine is a little giant, but basically the same thing. The moisture in the vermic should feel barely damp, if you squeeze a pinch on your fingers, you MIGHT get one drop of water out of it, it’s best to just watch the condensation inside the bowls. Even with the level of the soil, no water above soil or on the lids of the bowls. A thermostat is just like the one you have in your home, where you set the temperature at 83.5, and the heating element keeps it that temp. I have a digital temp gun, and my incubator has a dial on top to increase or decrease the temp. It takes a couple of days of adjusting then checking the temp with the gun before you get it just right, and then after you add the eggs, you have to open the bowls and point the gun at the egg itself, not just in the air, and do a little more adjusting so the eggs are between 80-84, because they vary a little just from being in different spots in the incubator. Here’s a couple of pics of my first clutch in bowls. This was before I got the temp gun, so I don’t use this thermometer that came with the incubator..turns out it was WAY wrong anyway, so don’t trust them.
