It is such a shame that the Pet Shops dont go to the trouble of being updated and jacked up with NEW developments. It upsets me so much.

IF they are only concerned about the money then surely it makes business sense to know whats right.

THE POOR DEFENCELESS ANIMALS. I have had only the wrong advice from my Pet Shop here in THE WILLOWS, PRETORIA SOUTH AFRICA. Kitty litter substrate is a no-no ( paper towel,tile, reptile carpet is best) wrong bulbs (no light at night too), wrong food, UVB bulb at front instead of near the basking spot, DONT PUT TWO BEARDIES in one cage guys !!! -
Both our areas pet shops staff have the same - we know it all - attitude- So i will be printing out the dialogue here and faxing it to them.

Hopefully our local pet shop will take note of this REPTIGLO info and other mistakes/advice - If i dont see them doing something about it then i will be reporting them to the local herp association.

I am sooooo glad i discovered this website-

I got kicked out of my pet store because I decided to talk to a customer who was about to buy one. Then when the manager came over I gave him a lot of lip. No cursing, but some serious attitude. I was removed from the store and now not allowed back in.

O well, not my loss. I’ll just drive the extra 5 miles and go to the better pet store.

I have been so worried about my little beardie, she stopped eating and doesn’t seem to see her food. I have tried all kinds of bugs but it seemed like she just didn’t see them. I have tried feeding her chicken baby food. I saw this posting and sure enough I am using this bulb. I had no idea there was a problem with it. I will be going shopping for a new one tomorrow. Thank you soooo much, she has lost alot of weight hopefully she will rebound with a new light.

Oh i am sorry to hear that, thats why we are trying to keep this thread at the top,as alot of people are not aware of these lights yet. I went through the same thing with my boy as well, and even after the light came out he went through a rough time from the side affects. He lost alot of weight as well and was very dehydrated but after 2 weeks or so of syringe feeding him baby food with a little calcium, and alot of warm soaks, he finally came around. Today he in nice and plump again and back to normal. How long did you have the light in there? It was only a month for my boy and i almost lost him. Good luck with him.

cool group of people on here hey? - :) - just faxed a two page letter to the local pet shop- mentioned the 14 or so things they told me which was way incorrect and hurtful to my beardie AND chameleon- hopefully they will do some research and change the advice they hadn out- I tried some psychology trying to convincing them that they will make even more money if they do things the right way and give the right advice !

Okielizardgal, I’m glad you found this post. I would leave the UVB off for a few days before replacing it with a good one. Also, keep in mind that it might take a couple of weeks for him to get back to normal. After a couple of weeks with the new bulb, I’d get a fecal done on him to rule out parasites as well. Sometimes stress can cause certain parasites (that beardie’s have anyway without problems) to multiply. Good luck and keep us posted!

I had the light on for about 5 weeks. I have turned the UV light off and only have heat lamp on. Still feeding baby food with an eye dropper. I have gotten her to eat a few Phoenix worms. Warm soaks, she seems to like that. I put a few crickets in but she doesn’t seem to see them. :( Hopefully she will make a nice recovery. I have 2 other beardies in different enclosure, they are fat and sassy. I have a different lighting system on them.

Hello!

Anyone who has used this bulb longer than a couple of weeks & their reptile has begun to show health problems, eye problems or weight loss does need to shut the light off immediately.
I recommend not putting in a UVB light for at least 1 week, maybe 2 weeks to allow the inflammation & irritation to recede. These lights are emitting dangerous levels of UVB, borderline UVC. My concerns are that there is no data so far that reports on long term effects of low levels of radiation on reptiles but we all know what it does to humans. So, my assumptions would be that their overall health would eventually suffer.
So it does take them some time to recover & start to become healthy again. So that is why Frances & I believe it best to allow a 1-2 week rest period from UVB exposure & then evalutate them after that time period.
I hope that the petstore will listen to you! So many of them will not. It makes me furious that they do not educate themselves on the products that they sell. Otherwise they wouldn’t sell that calcisand, either.
