I got my first beardie this past August. He seemed like he was healthy and doing well. After finding this site I realize that there may be more problems than I thought. I compared his size to a post on here by someone who was asking what was normal for a certain aged dragon. Mine was older and smaller than theirs. Lately he also hasn’t been as active as he used to be, just slept and sat around most of the day not even climbing his basking log some days. I read about the lighting issues but I kept forgetting to check mine. Yesterday I finally checked my light and it turns out it was a reptiglo10. I have it off now and I’m going to the store today. I’m hoping he will make a full recovery from this. Do any of you have tips for me to help my dragon get better? I feel like an idiot for not checking the light sooner. This was the only type they had at the store I usually go to and when I bought him the worker said she uses it for her own pets so I thought it would be fine.

I’m posting my story for all the others on here who haven’t checked what light they have yet. Go check it NOW! It can help save your beardie’s life.

I’m glad you found this post! I would keep the UVB off for a week or so to help him recover. It may take him a few days to start looking better. If he doesn’t look better in a couple of weeks, I’d get a fecal done on him to rule out parasites. Check out lllreptile.com for cheap Reptisun 10.0’s. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon!

DON’T USE THE SCREW IN KIND AT ALL, ANYONE.

I know its been said before but I had my dragoon get sick on me just the other week from those screw in bulbs, I just got my tube light today and am paying special attention to make sure he is OK with that.

Lucky I was paying attention to him and noticed a changed in his behavior in time before something serious happened to him, by the way he is doing just fine now.

to also help with thsi effect beardies still need there uvb even if you run into this problem with the lighting you should deffinetly turn it off. but if its goign to take you a while to replaces these bad balbs. remeber 15-30 minutes outside in the sunshine is a days worth of uvb and will be much appreciated by your dragon. this will help him process the calcium he needs and more! with sunlight it also shows your dragons true nature and there colors come out 100 fold. also they are just so darn cute outside. specially fi you do weird stuff to them like proud moms and there kids like spitting on there face to clean stuff. put a beardie on a tree stump and take a picture its cute but they never wanna leave they hug that tree so hard hehe. anywho yes to help with uvb lighting when you got a bad one. take him out sid ein sunshine!

I’ve been taking Sarge out just about every day since I turned his light off. He seems to be getting better. He is starting to climb up his basking spot more and he chased his crickets super speed today. I’m glad I caught it fairly early. He was delayed in showing any signs that anything was wrong. Could that have been because I took him out anytime it was warm enough? Also is it normal for a him to have brumated his first winter? He was only 10 inches long.

It’s good he is doing better, that is always good to hear. Yes it could have been because you were taking him out when it was warm. As far as brumation, IDK about that my Beardie has never brumated, so I’m in the dark about it.

Yae i do the same thing as you.I take him outside instead of using a UVB bulb.Yea mine does that when it is warm outside.And yes it is ok for them to brumate in their first winter.Its just more common to see them brumate in their 2nd winter.
