 Let’s see the enclosures!

Hi bonez007!

Spyro has been on tile now since July. We made absolutely sure the tile was rough enough before my husband installed it.

She never slips around and she loves to run all over her cage. The only time we have to be careful is when she gets a spritz of water. That will make the tile super slippery. So we always make sure we spray only her body or we put her on her log first.

It also is a big help with the manicures. No need to cut her nails because the tile keeps them nice.

Toodles, Holly

LOL...thanks bonez! I love yours as well, you did a wonderful job.

why use floor tiles ? arnt they slippy for them ?

Some are, but if you use the ones like slate, with a rough topping they won’t slip. Alot of people use them to keep the nails nice and trimmed and or b/c they are easy to keep clean, but they do have a down side as well. I was reading a case a while ago where a female beardie keep digging the tile and the owner came home to find she had ripped ALL of her claws out! Yep, all of them. Back in the beginning i used to use tile as well and one of my males did the same thing, lost a claw due to digging, this was about 8 months ago and is just now growing back. I ditched the tile very quickly after that! LOL...

I went with tile because it seemed that that was the recommended thing to do. They protect the melamine from moisture. They are durable and easy to clean. I’ve never had a problem with Betty slipping around. The tile, along with the sanded grout steps and ledge, help with keeping nails short. And with the flexwatt underneath, they hold the heat really well. They help smooth out the temp and keep the thermostat from cycling too frequently.

The down side is they are heavy. The melamine is really heavy also. It took over a full 4’x8’ sheet of melamine and 8 12"x12" tiles for each enclosure. I haven’t weighed them but I would guess they are pushing 100lbs each. Definitely a two person job to move them.

awwwwwwwwwwww thats a shame about the claws poor little beardies. was it just on the joints where they was digging at ? if so ime thinking of maybe having a full peice of tile or something simlar to cover the floor.

yeah your right about how heavy the vivs are, mine is also 4fx2fx2f easy to make and all that but i couldnt move it on my own lol

Here is the terrarium now flipped on it’s back (and finally now has PERFECT temps but still gonna get the MVB). I’ve still got quite a bit to do & replace in the cage before I’m happy w/ it. :) So whatcha’ think so far?

Shannon, i just was looking at your enclosure again, is the uvb on top of glass? UVB rays will not go through screen or glass, and is there an opening on top for air flow?

Nope, the UVB is not on top of glass. It’s completely open and yep, there’s an airflow opening. :)

Nancy,
I think I’m jealous. I want a reptile room like yours now. It looks so organized and pretty and fun and..........................Oh, if only.............

Dsbthorn,
The enclosure you built is very interesting. How big is it? Are those all doors in the front? I can’t wait to see it when it’s all set up.

I know this is just for BD’s but I had to show off my daughter’s leopard gecko "Marley" (as in Bob Marley). He is the sweetest thing! I also wanted to just show a quick pic of my 4 rescue fur kids. All came from HORRIBLE abuse. Mind you I have 3 children and a husband as well so I’m a very busy woman! LOL! I just wanted to share w/ all of you.

Thank you! There is just one door in front. I made the large side door so it is easy to clean. If you look, the left side has an upper level. I can’t find my memory card for my camera, otherwise I would show pics of complete set up. This is the second one I’ve built. I put some really short legs and some wheels on the other one and stacked this one on top. I really like them and they look great!

Hi dsbthorn!

I would really love to see how that enclosure looks stacked with another and also to see it all set up. I hope you find that memory card or take new pictures. It sounds so interesting.

Oh and Nancy now I’m really jealous. I LOVE our Leopard Geckos and have been hinting to my husband that we need a new reptile addition. I wonder what he’d say after seeing your enclosures and all that you have.

Toodles, Holly
