Anyway, I am saying that you can head to a shelter and pick up a fabulous, inexpensive mutt cat that needs a home and the shelter can tell you all about its temperament. If you buy an expensive kitten, it doesn’t ensure personality when it’s older. I’d suggest a one year old cat so you can tell more about its personality. And a male, lol, if you want your female to get along with it. All I’m saying is that just because your coon is mean, doesn’t mean all coons are (I know some amazing coons!), and just because yoshi’s lynxes are great, doesn’t mean they all are. You also have to take into account that lynx cats are not really domestic and will require some extra research and knowledge. That’s why I like mutts, they tend to get the best of all their breeds and if you go with an adult, you always know exactly what you are getting : ) Also, what bullies to you plan on breeding? |

My ex had a maine coon that ended up staying with his mom when we got married. One day when my niece (who was 7 at the time) was visiting, he left and warned her to "LEAVE THE CAT ALONE...SHE’S MEAN". He came back to find that "mean old cat" laying in her arms like a baby, sleeping! That same cat would let me rub it’s belly and brush and cut the mats out of her fur. They expected her to be mean so she was.... to them. It really depends on how they are raised and treated. Anyway... I do agree... no matter what kind of cat you’re looking for (except maybe a Highland Lynx), chances are you can find a kitty to fit the description at a shelter. Yoshi...your cats are gorgeous!!!! Laya is beautiful, but being a sucker for tabbies I really like Saki. With those ears, do they have scottish fold in them? |

American Bull Dogs, but I wouldn’t be breeding until I am done learning everything there is to know about the breed itself and breeding. I already have the perfect vet alighned to team up with, I am getting ready to go back to school to study veterinary medicine as well. Quote: You also have to take into account that lynx cats are not really domestic and will require some extra research and knowledge.
I always do my research before investing into any animals, not just cats and I know that it isn’t a domestic breed, lol. It does have the name lynx. I of course want to be as knowledable is the animal as I can be that way when something comes up, I may know what to do or know if it is a hazard or not. I actually have my vets home phone # just in case there is an emergency with one of my pets and they need immediate attention, he is a great vet, he will make a trip at any time of the night for me if I need it. But if I call he knows there is an emergency because I usually know what is wrong and how to handle it. |

Btw, your cats are classified by the USDA to be domestic. If someone gives you a problem about those cats, remember that federal law supersedes local laws, and the federal law specifically says hybrids of domestic and wild cats are domestic animals. Most smaller exotic cats like yours are regarded as domestic cats. If you have the time and resources and there’s no non-breeding clause, you should definitely look at breeding these cats if it interests you. Breeding clauses are such a pain because of the dangers of spay/neutering, demand of purebred cats, and/or how much breeders tack on to get a share of the profits from breeding. Hybrids and wild/exotic cats are in very high demand these days. Savannah cats sell out months if not years ahead of when litters are born. If the breeder is international, these cats sell out years ahead of availability I’ve learned. Servals take deposits months or a year in advance of any litters. Bengals tend to be a little less sought after, but still fetch a good price and sell relatively quickly. I’m sure the same applies to your cat breed. You shouldn’t feel bad about it either. We have 60 million stray domestic cats in the USA but our shelters are importing tens of thousands of stray animals from foreign countries. The number of stray exotic cats is now 0 again since they caught the Serval that got loose in MI earlier this week. Unfortunately most people don’t realize all the smoke and mirrors behind owning exotic cats or the hyped up abandonment problem that doesn’t exist (ban laws without grandfather clauses do not count as abandonment). Good luck with your cats! |

Spay/neutering is the safest procedure you could possibly have done to a cat. I work with a shelter who spays/neuters almost 2000 cats per year and we have never lost one! There is a reason for breeding clauses. Not just anyone should have a wild cat living in their house. It takes a lot of time and research to know what you are doing with them, and breeders want to make sure that the offspring of their cats aren’t ending up in bad situations or being bred over and over. Spaying/neutering also prevents animals from getting testicular/ovarian/mammary cancer and greatly reduces the risk of UTIs and kidney problems in males. Quote: Hybrids and wild/exotic cats are in very high demand these days.
That is not why you should be breeding. You should breed because you love your animals, love the breed, and want to improve it. You should not breed just because people will buy the kittens. Quote: als take deposits months or a year in advance of any litters. Bengals tend to be a little less sought after, but still fetch a good price and sell relatively quickly.
That is disgusting! Animals should NOT be brought into this world because they "fetch a good price"! And I’m sure yoshi will agree with me! I know that if she decides to breed her kitties it will not be done lightheartedly or because she wants to make a lot of money. It will be because she appreciates the breed and wants the experience of raising the kittens and finding them really really good homes. Quote: We have 60 million stray domestic cats in the USA but our shelters are importing tens of thousands of stray animals from foreign countries.
Are you in the US? And where did you get those figures? Yoshi, you should breed your cats if and when you are ready and want to, and I will totally back you up. I know that they will be well cared for and find good indoor homes where, hopefully, you will require spay/neuter contracts since they might not to as good a job as you with breeding. |

I love both my cats and wouldnt trade them for the world.. nor my adopted ones. We wanted to get Saki a friend and my husband said he wanted another lynx so we found one. She has had her issues with health and Saki has just gotten over a massive UTI.. with stronger breeds you have more problems with your animals.. thats the price you pay for these types though..and some people out there will do it! Dragongirl... I understand where you are comming from but we love exotic pets and I plan to have more in the future. I do my research and I hate that homeless cats not of a specific breed are homeless...but if you look at some online things even about the most rarest cats and reptiles and any animal.... they are tortured EVERYDAY!! So, I feel that I have helped in some way..even though these cats came from a nice home...it’s sad to see that a demand can ruin a species or a breed. Even homeless animals are the same in that aspect.. we neglect b/c we dont want and that is abuse...or we want the rare breed so bad that we will do anything for them and abuse happens..see what I mean.. we are horrible people BUT the people that research in these things and help out like you, this guy and I are good people b/c he has said he has helped the homeless cats and you do rescue services.. I understand he might look at life and breeding and breeds a different way than you..but we all love animals and try to help them. I hope I helped this, b/c like I have been saying in this thread.. I only wanted to show my cats to the world.. not cause a WW3!! LOL!! So.. I have a bunch of pics of my babies and I love all animals no breed hated... I just hate that we have to know that these special breeds are being abused for us to own... but like I said there are normal breeds being abused too, and no matter what breed we are getting all animals are being abused and we cant stop it. Just like peace on earth and the war... we can only make it better for our selves and our animals and plants... LIFE! |

If you ever do breed her, post pictures! They’ll be the cutest kittens ever. Making money should not be the reason to breed any animal. |

That’s quite interesting because a vet managed to kill a white german shepard my family used to own when they neutered him. He went under and never came back. He was a year old. This was back in 1987. Perhaps spay/neuter processes have been improved since that time.
Quote: Not just anyone should have a wild cat living in their house. It takes a lot of time and research to know what you are doing with them, and breeders want to make sure that the offspring of their cats aren’t ending up in bad situations or being bred over and over. Most responsible animal owners would completely agree with you, and I’m one of them. Whenever I have an animal under my care, be it one I own or one I’m helping a friend with, I always do research on it to figure out how best to care for it.
Quote: That is not why you should be breeding. You should breed because you love your animals, love the breed, and want to improve it. You should not breed just because people will buy the kittens. Proliferating the breed is a valid way of showing compassion towards a particular breed and waiting to improve it. Increasing availability is an avenue of improvement. If you want to see more of a particular kind of animal, then help make it available and more people will come on board to purchase them. Furthermore, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with making some extra money on the side when you’re properly caring for and responsibly nurturing the mother cat and its offspring. I know you see it as unethical, but I do not. The more people who own exotic breeds of cats from responsible breeders, the better. Breeders tend to put teeth on their contracts these days because of all the mistakes made in the past that have contributed to the wild self-sustaining domestic cat populations.
You should not penalize people of today for mistakes made by people in the past. I have NEVER released any animal and have ALWAYS taken what my vets have called "superb" and "way better than average" care of my pets. I will not be penalized from owning the animals I have a passion for because some idiot irresponsible owner released their animal or contributed to the stray pet population. Quote: That is disgusting! Animals should NOT be brought into this world because they "fetch a good price"! Animals are legally property. You find it disturbing but I find your point of view to be selfish. Demand on these animals is high and not enough breeders exist to meet that demand thus causing sometimes extreme waiting times just to get some breeds of animal, especially F1 and F2 Savannah cats in particular. Back in the early 1990’s my family bred pure golden retrievers and people were going nuts to buy one because we took good care of them and informed people about the best ways to take care of this particular breed as opposed to the generic dog. Just because all those stray mixed breeds exist out there doesn’t mean people want them or want to be penalized for the mistakes of irresponsible owners. We were going to do the same for a chocolate lab, but he’s been barred for being genetically tested to have canine hip dysplasia. I hope you realize that just because you don’t like it, there should be no impediment to responsible owners and breeders from breeding their own pets if people will actually buy them. Again, you should not be penalizing responsible people for the mistakes of irresponsible people.

Yes, I am on the east coast of the USA. Sources include, but are not limited to: NAIA and NAIA Trust - Link National Geographic and HSUS - Link Link Stray Pet Advocacy - Link Responsible Exotic/Hybrid Pet Ownership - Link Activist Cash - Link Animal Scam - Link I absolutely refuse to support shelters that import foreign animals or donate money to Political Action Committees masquerading around as animal charities. I’m sitting on plenty of cash should I wish to do so, but I’d rather put the effort into stepping up from reptiles into small and medium exotic cats. |

I do also, however, have something to sy about the spay/neuter safety thing. Quote: That’s quite interesting because a vet managed to kill a white german shepard my family used to own when they neutered him. He went under and never came back. He was a year old. This was back in 1987. Perhaps spay/neuter processes have been improved since that time.
1. Of course the procedure has improved since then. They can do it with lazers now and it’s much safer. Also we’ve learned a lot about medicine for both people and animals since 1987. 2. It is a surgery. There will always be that 1% that doesn’t make it. I am sorry it was your dog but just because it happened once doesn’t mean that the entire procedure across america and canada is suspect. 3. Dogs can die because of an allergic reaction to anesthetic. It does happen occasionally. This might be what had happened to your dog. If your dog was allergic to the anesthetic then any surgery could have killed it. If the dog hadn’t been neutered and had lived, then had gotten cancer when the vet operated to remove the tumor the dog could have died...Does this mean we shouldn’t operate on cancer??? Sorry to rant a bit, but people need to understand that there are always some risks, but they really aren’t huge. And, again, your cats are so beautiful! |

Also, vet technology had improved greatly since 1987, which is one of the reasons why spaying/neutering should be supported. It eliminates the risk of mammary, ovarian, and testicular cancer ( as well as preventing accidental breeding or "unwanted" behavior such as attempting to mate with foreign or inanimate objects and wandering.) AS said before, there is always the risk of complications during any operation or surgery, including breeding. ~ your cats are beautiful, but not for everyone. |

And the spay and neuter issue is not my issue! I dont know how this thread got bombarted with this crap! Honestly, I will get Laya spayed when I have the extra money. She has been through 2 heat cycles already here in just a month. We have her inside and she has not tried to escape and we have no other "stray" or unwanted cats around that will make "unwanted" cats. I cant believe some of the people saying that stuff. I would never let my cat get pregnant and then give the freakin kittens to a shelter. I would make sure their homes are nice. I adopted a cat from a trailer park back in the 90’s and I still have her and love her just as much as these cats that are expensive. Love doesnt mean it has to cost money! So, please... if you have nothing to say possitive about my cats..dont post on here. Thanks... |
