Did you read any of my posts? I’m assuming by your broken sentence that you meant to say that grocery store brands are just as good as premium brands but cheaper. THEY HAVE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT INGREDIENTS AND NUTRITIONAL VALUES!! If you have, obviously, never read the back of any bags of food and compared them, you should not be posting incorrect information! I work at a pet store and we sell over fifteen different brands of food and ALL are VERY different depending on the cat’s needs! Diet foods, hairball formulas, allergy foods, sensitive stomach foods, active formulas, indoor formulas, fatty formulas, kitten formulas, etc. and all are very different!! "Noname brands" as you called them are largely made of CORN to FILL UP your cat without giving him/her the nutrition necessary for growth and health. Cats in the wild eat MEAT, and so should yours! The first three ingredients should contain two meat products (NOT by-products!) and not just a bunch of corn and wheat that’s cheap enough to make a lot of money on. |

Think about what a wild/feral or stray cat would eat. Mice, rabbits, shrews, moles, etc, all of these are animals. You will NEVER find a cat attacking a stalk of corn unless a bird landed on it. Corn is what is in a lot of foods that are on the market for our pets. Before you argue this just look at the ingredients of the food. And TWO! Don’t forget that this a friendly helpful forum and that getting too worked up over pet food is a little silly. Don’t forget to have fun!! |

Anyway, it’s just absurd to not even read an ingredients list and act like an expert. I really liked your post about attacking a stalk of corn! So true! Anyway, oh well. I suppose I should get back to the cats who aren’t being fed ANYTHING. |

I totally understand how one can get carried away at almost 4:00 am. At that hour I got Royal Canin and Grand Cayman mixed up! Sorry about that...guess we know where my mind was really at! lol I should have been more specific in regards to the food label I quoted. Purina ONE Special Care Healthy Weight Formula does in fact have turkey as it’s first ingredient. Aside from that, we really DO agree! Working for a vet, I’ve made basically the same recommendations as you have. HOWEVER, I also see the people who come in and just can’t afford the premium brands. These are good people who take good care of their pets... like the senior citizen who only gets half of their prescription filled so they can have their cat’s teeth fixed or the family who doesn’t get a pet until they have the money to pay for it’s vaccines and getting it fixed (and whose kids save their birthday money so the new addition will have toys!) Would I deny that family or lonely senior a pet because they’re going to feed it what is on sale that week? No and I don’t think you would either. To those people I say "read the labels" and buy the best you can. (I also send them away with a big bag of food samples :)) Soooo... to clarify the point I was trying to make....Do premium foods offer the best nutrition? you betcha! But... is that bag of Meow Mix or Cat Chow substantial for an otherwise healthy kitty? Sure. And let’s face it, if feeding only premium foods was a requirement for adopting a pet, a LOT more of them would be put to sleep don’t you think? And BTW, my guys think that the BEST food would have mouse, songbird and grasshopper as the first three ingredients! |

Yes, I think you should feed what you can afford, but if you can afford better food, you should not say "they are the same only cheaper" and buy the cheaper kind. My neighbor just dropped off a bag of purina dog chow when their apartment burned to the ground and the family dog was killed. It was so sad! The amount of love for your pet has nothing to do with how much money you have, but it does have to do with knowing which foods are best and buying the best one you can. I am SO tired of seeing perfectly well off people come in and ask why we don’t have kibbles n bits! I actually have pretty much zero income (I’m technically a volunteer), but I work so many hours that I get free supplies, so I can pick out the most expensive brand of food in there to feed to my dog, and I am well aware that a lot of people don’t have that opportunity, but everyone who has a pet should at least KNOW which foods are healthier and why and buy the best ones they can when they can. I was simply arguing the point that just because it’s food doesn’t mean it’s nutritional. My brother fed Iams to his cats all the way through college because that’s what he could afford (of course, as soon as he moved here I switched them to Royal Canin and gave him my store discount), which, yes, was far better than dumping them in a shelter! They would never do that (he and his wife). They are one of the few halfway through college not married couples I’ve seen who have actually made a lifetime commitment to their cats. Almost all of the cats that are returned to us are from people in their mid twenties who split up and "couldn’t keep them". Anyway, it is only 12:48 here : ) I’m on the west coast. But, yes, I am definitely going on a rant. : ) Sleep now! |
