Sorry to bring this post back but I’m finding it to be a pretty interesting discussion and would like to see more, since I’m doing some research on Pit Bulls. I would recommend anyone looking to learn more about this breed to check out Link and Link.

Here’s my opinion. Pit Bulls have always been bred to be fight dogs. It’s simple as that. They are bred for it as much as roosters are for poopie head fights. Just because SOME Pit Bulls are big and vicious from years of selective breeding and training/abuse doesn’t mean that ALL Pit Bulls are big and vicious, right?

To those of you talking about how it’s similar to racism. I agree and disagree because racism isn’t the same as discrimination. If that man who shot the dog were to see a big Poodle standing there he probably wouldn’t have shot it, but it was a Pit Bull, and he had most likely heard things about Pit Bulls; the bad things. The things that are news worthy. Do you ever see a headline saying, "Pit Bull Impresses Many with Good Behavior"?

It’s the exact same as how the prison population consists of 44% black men. You heard me right, 44%. There’s a 1 in 3 chance that a black man will be sent to prison in his life, and there’s probably a 1 in 3 chance that your Pit Bull will be the victim of circumstances and end up with it’s arms and legs up in the air, just like what happened to the OP’s neighbor.

As much as people try not to discriminate, it’s their instinct, and hard for them to go against something in their blood, which goes back to the matter of Pit Bulls being bred for violence and fights. There are many lines (families maybe?) of fighting Pit Bulls. If a dog wins a fight, it will most likely be bred to a good, strong looking female because it has good genes.

So back to the main point... Pit Bulls have a bad reputation, and there’s not much you can do about it except for train yours to be as well behaved as possible and train it to control its self so that instances like these won’t be misunderstood as an attack.

To be honest though, I was always afraid of Pit Bulls until I started actually meeting them, and not once have I seen a Pit Bull that hasn’t amazed me by proving the stereotype wrong and by making dogs as a species look great. All I have to say about them is, "Bravo!" lol...

To Shoc: You will probably find this offensive but I’m really just trying to help. On a forum you usually want to be as polite as possible because a lot of people are sensitive to their own opinions and will defend them, because they don’t like being called stupid for having an OPINION. Hm. Strange huh? Seriously though, you shouldn’t be telling anyone "what kind of a person" they are, even if you believe strongly that you’re right. In a discussion where people give their opinions, no one is right or wrong... unless they say something like "Hail Hitler! Death to the jews!" or something really really offensive like that.

To everyone else: I’m sorry if I rambled or if this is poorly written, I have very bad sleeping schedules and often can’t speak or type as well as usual... I’m sure many of you can relate. Please post responses to this post I want to know what you think, and please don’t criticize me for my opinion I’m just trying to contribute. =)
