 "How To" cages

The casement window I got opend at a 90 degree angle. And it has holes. But I took that one back I won’t be going to get the other untill friday. Iam thinking it’ll be much easier to build a door. Weather strip it and cut it out and put a plexiglass piece on it. Since the front measures 6’ high and 4’ wide I can make the door 2.5 feet long and 5 feet high and make the plexi piece fit maybe 4’X4’.then it’ll leave a 1’ for topsoil/playsand and leaf litter. Any alterations roger?

Felipe, like Shay said, post pictures of the window and what you have done so far on the cage. This way we can see what you’ve got going on work from there.

Does an Argus need less than an Albig to burrow in? I said I was giving mine 18" and was told it’s not really deep enough. Just wondering.

Ah, I only saw ’Argus’ on his profile. I guess Timors are more arboreal, than burrower? Thanks.

Sorry, it is for a timor a trio of timors that’s why iam not putting the 2’ of substrate. My argus is in a outdoor pen. With about 4’ deep of dirt. He’s kept as the rescues ’mascot’ I haven’t updated this profile in the years I’ve been on this site. The timor group just came into my rescue from houston from a lady which I call my sister rescue. She helped me with my 501c3.iam thinking of bringing my argus back home as my private captive I miss the girl.

Here’s the link to the window iam getting. Its good enough size for me to get in and out.

Felipe, the casement window is no good. The crank is on the opposite side of the swing of the window. When you turn the crank, the window will swing into the cage. You need a slider.

$200 Yikes!

I got both my 6x3’ vinyl windows for $25 each. I got them from the return section at Lowe’s home improvement store. Craigslist has been known to have many deals like that as well.

I’d look around if I were you. No need to pay full price for a window that’s going on a lizard cage

Those are the craigslist prices iam posting. I don’t see why the casement wouldn’t work even if it opens into the enclosure. Its perfect size and it won’t mess with my design inside.

You will be sorry if you use casement windows, Felipe. The fact that they open in means you’ll have to work around them on the inside of the cage. Besides, you can’t even see through the glass on the windows pictured in your link.

L0L..you know what I just realized that. Windows are great looking but since these varanids aren’t in the best of enclosure at my rescue iam just gonna build a door and weather strip it all around. And put a piece of plexi on it. Simple as that. Then when I upgrade ill add the window.

Krusty- how did you attach it to the wood? Also, what kind of caulking did you seal the edges with?
How does the vinyl flooring hold up over time? Thanks!

Well, Krusty would tell you to use the recommended adhesive made for sheet linoleum to glue it to the wood. Use polyurethane caulk to seal the corners. It holds up well if none of the edges of the sheet linoleum are exposed. If a large digging monitor gets at the edges, the sheet linoleum is done. Your best bet is FRP in a cage housing a large monitor. My niles have dug through linoleum before. FRP is impervious to digging monitors.

So I am starting my temp to perm enclosure. To start it will be 8x4x4. This is for my juvi mangrove. After I have moved and settled somewhere I will add the other 4 ft of height that I have mentioned. So, for the bottom I am just going to frame and screw in the plywood. A few questions first:

-What type of 2x4 should I use, pressure treated?

-How should I waterproof the lower 2ft, what is the what sheet that covers the bottom?

-What should I cover the top with? Does plexi glass come in 4ftx8ft measurements?

Thanks, if you have any links to more detailed enclosure instructions I would appreciate it. (I am using my google skills as we speak)

No need for pressure treated 2x4’. The plywood should be attached to the frame on the inside of the cage.

Cover the top with plywood.

Frp (fiberglass reinforced plastic) is the best material for the bottom portion of the cage. You would be better off covering the whole inside of the cage with it.

I have one question. To mount things [wooden light fixtures and such] to the frp can you just use screws?
