I guess I should describe my cage before I ask so: my cage will have 3 walls of a material(IDK yet) and a plexiglass front viewing window. It will have 1-3 lights on top for expanded basking and a door on the side of the lights. First, what should I make it out of? Second, I don’t know what to do about the door in terms of material, hinges, or how! I think it will be around 3-4 feet long, 1-3 ft. high, and 1-3 ft. wide. Any tips or suggestions? Please post

Well first of all, there are a couple care sheets in the monitor section, but if you want some info on them I can tell you smething. A good cage that is the minimum size is 48 x 24 x 24 inches. Plian old dirt that is clear of anything harmful is a good substrate, but I have heard of other substrates like a clay/dirt mixture or some kind of sticky sand. But stick with dirt beacuse that’s what everone told me to do. They mainly eat insects and miceonce a week as well as some superworms once a week as their meal for the day. If you read this thread thoroughly, you can find some useful tips on how to build you Ackie cage. As for me, my cage is still under construction, but it has wood on the bottom, both sides, and the back. The front has a plexiglass, viewing window, and the top has either a sliding glass door or a hinged door, with lights on the other side of the cage. If you have anymore questions, please ask, Hope this helps, Alec

I notice that many of you use halogen bulbs for main basking heat source. I have used CHE’s mainly because I fear that using halogens 24 hours would provide no light cycle. I notice my Argus go right to sleep when the lights go out.
Shay - I see you use a CHE in addition to the halogens...do your halogen’s go off at night?
Living in coastal BC, my winter climate is relatively mild (for Canada) but with my monitor’s cage in the basement - I couldn’t get away with a single CHE for night time heating.
Somehow I can’t help but think there is a simple answer to this dumb question - but how do most of you deal with the halogen’s constant light? Or do they go off at night and you rely on alternate heat source after dark?

Thanks,
Pat

All my lizards are on a 12 hour light cycle. The basking lights are only on for about 10 of those hours. The CHE is burning 24 hrs a day to maintain the desired ambient air temps. It’s plugged into a rheostat so I can adjust it according to the season. And of course everything is on timers.

It’s ok for the air temps to drop at night. I wouldn’t be too concerned unless the temps dropped into the low 60’s at night. If that’s the case then you may want to consider a 24 hr heat source.
cheers

I have found a company called Interstate Plastics that sells a material called Foamed (PVC) such as the plastic that animal plastics uses for all of their cages, however; i use it on the lower half of my cages to waterproof them. The pvc comes in pre cut panels and you can weld it with a chemical sealer which melts the pvc together and then cures so instead of 2 pieces of pvc glued together they become one piece and the seal is actually stronger than the original pvc. Anyways this thread is the best in a long time. Now going to read the feeder thread. BUMP.
