 "How To" cages

BansheeRacer25, did you read any of the posts on this thread? If you did you would realize that screen tops are not ideal, and alternate ways of building the cage was mentioned.

Monitors need room to dig so a 2 foot tall cage is not enough room for all the dirt you’ll need and all the above dirt room you’ll need.

In addition this thread has talked about what kind of materials to use inside your cage to protect against water damage.

Try reading through the posts instead of just looking at the pictures. So far all your questions and problems have been covered.

hey shay, you have created a hide box screwed near the top of the viv under the heat lamps with a hole in it, if i done something like that would a nile monitor climb up and use it as a hide?
i live in the uk and im thinking of making a huge viv a bit bigger than yours and getting 2 or 3 gouldii in there, im going to keep the viv in my 20’x10’x8’ shed, dont worry about the weather i live down near the south and weather is almost always fine and the worst we get is rain, im gonna get a fan and about 3 or 4 heat lamps, im planning on making the viv dimensions of 10’x4’x7’ lxwxh

thanks for your time

I can’t say for sure, but probably. At least the young ones are more likely to. I’ve never kept niloticus and can’t speak for them.

hey shay, you know the FRP is it also called vinyl film? i live in the uk so it may be called different? because you can get big roles of vinal film that if thick and you have to screw it into the wood.

thanks for your time, jamie

I don’t think we’re talking about the same thing. You can not roll up FRP. It’s thick and strong. You should be able to find it at any home improvement stores.

I’m sure there are many ways to seal a cage. You could fiberglass the whole thing, or use epoxy. Or, you could use bare wood and replace the whole thing when it rots, and depending on the species that could happen sooner or later. FRP in my opinion is a simple solution to a difficult problem. With the right tools like a saw and possibly a trimmer(router), with a little know how, any one can do it.

Even though FRP is a popular choice among us cage builders, you’re free to find alternative ways to seal your cages. And if you find any that you feel is superior let us know.

No way. That’s called hardibacker or greenboard (a water-resistant, not waterproof drywall). You need plastic sheets as FRP are rigid sheets used on walls in public bathrooms, but you can use linoleum or 2 part epoxy paints, or fiberglass resins to waterproof the insides. Some people use pond liners, but they are toenail ripping prone. FRP is just simple as you cut and glue it on, but expensive (same price as a sheet of plywood or more). Either way, the edges must be meticulously sealed from moisture or that will be your rotting point where wet dirt is always touching.

wow guys these are some awesome Ideas! cross your fingers for me! I should find out by thursday if I’m prequalified for my house. if so, I’m taking out some extra money to build a nice setup for my baby! may I ask roughly how much you guys spent? just to get an idea... I really like the idea with the sink Shay. Thats awesome! I hope you don’t mind... I may copy that from you. I’ve been wondering what I was going to do about water. also... do you guys treat the logs you get in anyway? or are they safe to put in there when you find something like that outside?

If the logs are hollow, I spray them down with plain old water and leave them out side in the sun for a couple days. I hate ants! I’m not sure if they are a detriment to monitors in any way but I make sure they are gone before using anything from outside. If they are freshly cut, I do nothing to them, in they go. If I had paid for all the materials I used in the cages I posted here the price would have been between 600-700 bucks.

These enclosures ares something else. I was wondering if someone could post plans, or directions and supplies needed to build the same or similar enclosures. Reason being, I’ve never built anything like this so I would like a lil walk-thru on paper to help me out.
