Hey Roger ...thanks for the link ...I am honored ....lol

Shay ...I am looking at your wiring...I am just to picky I guess but looks like you ran out of white neutral?
And if you have power and neutral on both sides of the same receptacle...won’t that create a problem?

I am sure you know what you are doing ...but I am just learning from a contractor myself...
I noticed the terminal blocks too where your ground is landed .... how is that insulated from the power wires ?

NICE set up ...I wanted to expand to a four gang box with switches right after I built my first one.

hi Cp,
I don’t have the power wires and return wires connected to the same side. That would short out the circuit and I’d have a fire for sure. The power wires (black) were hooked up later and they went directly to the switches before going to the outlet.

The ground wires are completely separated from the power wires. Electricity always takes the path of least resistance, and will not travel through the block of wood, if it can freely move down the copper wire. No worries there.

Whoa! I look at all this and I am like ok this is really awesome but it seems really hard to do. The lights and things confuse the hell out of me. How could you put the lights up in a way that is easier for a teenager? I have no time to even do any of that wiring I don’t even know how. I can copy pretty well though. I am a really good at that so if I can have a step by step instruction I could try and do it. Also, couldn’t you buy a shelf and take the shelfs out and reinforce it using that FRD stuff. That would save time, right? am I wrong?

Reptileguy123, I think your best bet is to use power strips. All this fancy wiring is not really necessary, especially if you’re not familiar with how electrical components work. That’s a good way to get zapped, or cause a fire.

I think it would be easier to build a cage, than to convert a shelving unit

Surge-protector 6-ways and prewired reptile rheostats are safer than experimenting w/ wiring. They are not that expensive either with all "hot" components hidden. All these kids asking how to wire up lighting make me extremely nervous (no offense if adults are asking) and apprehensive to answer anything.

I realize this is a monitor thread, but the vivarium pics are awesome and I just can’t stop myself from posting the viv that I have for my bearded dragon. Oh yeah, for reptileguy123, if you see the way my lighting is done for my BD, if you have a savannah monitor you can just upsize your cage to match your needs.
See the powerstrip on the left side of the pic? You could do something similar to that. Just make sure that you are meeting the needs of your monitor.





Again, this viv is for a bearded dragon, which is quite abit smaller than a full grown montor.

Design a cage, write a list of supplies from the plans, go to lowes or home depot, buy the stuff, take a picture of the receipt, and post it on this thread. That, or send me a money order for a hundred bucks and I’ll do it for you.

Rallaster - nice Beardie set-up, but a monitor in an open screen top and no substrate will dehydrate and not do so well. Take that same cage, mount the lights within under a solid top and add a foot or two of substrate depth below the windows/doors and you’ve got a solid enclosure there for Varanids. Dragons do ok in open-top set ups, monitors don’t.

I realize that, that is why I stressed the meeting the needs of yor monitor so much. I do have a sand substrate in my beardies cage, and I know that sand isn’t really recommended as a substrate for any animal, but my beardie has been on it for about a year without any problems, so I’m not to concerned at this point. The humidity requirements are for Savvy’s as well? I know that niles and dumerals need mass amounts of humidity, but I thought that savvys being from a more or less dry grassland wouldn’t need as much humidity? I’ve never had a monitor before so I am asking to sooth my own curiousity.

How much does a cage like the first one of shays actually cost? Im planning on building a real nice cage so i just wanted to see about how much i would be spending on it.

I also got a kind of off topic question from my friend that keeps a water with a screen top. He wants to know if he switches from a basking light to a flood to get better temps will the screen melt. He has the screen like you would have on a typical 75 gallon tank. He knows about the humidity issue so he sprays like 3 times a day. He was just wanting to know before he switches

i am building a similar tank as trhe one above. i built the bottom the same, at 8’x4’x2’. i used 2x4s and particle board. without the lining it cost about 70 dollars to build (including screws/nails). i also live in canada so the prices will probably be different wereever you live and depending on the place you go to buy your wood.

Ok that sounds good. I have been to canada so i know how your money works. I know it will cost me at least 120 for the ply wood because it cost 30 for an 8x4 and i will need 4 sheets and then either some plexiglass or a window for the door + the 2x4s so im guessing it will probally cost at least 250.

here’s a tip
if your monitor is small, build the bottom first, then you can keep the baby in this portion while you build the top. i put a largeleftover piece of plywood to cover the top and hung a couple heatlamps down into the tank. add some furniture and a couple inches of dirt and your all set until the top is done. this is what i’m doing and its working good so far. makes your money woahs feel not as heavy lol :)
