More For The Young-ins Wanting Large Monitors.

Hey Roger,VERY GOOD POST, the thing I find funny is the "Kids" that say I know what I got myself into and so do my parents!!!!!!!!!!! I say BS, when me, my brothers or my friends were young-ins and brought home a reptile, my parents and their parents were fine as long as it fit into one of the 10 gallon tanks we had and was able to stay in that tank!!!LOL

Some want to give a few of these kids the benefit of the doubt and say, " wow he/she really sounds sincere, their parents must be involved, this kid is the exception to the rule", well in reality he/she is not and have been Reading this forum and others (which is a good thing, reading that is) enough to manipulate a few into believing they have everything under control or are able to "PROPERLY CARE FOR" an adult "ADVANCED SPECIES OF REPTILE.

When "MOST" parents see a baby monitor that is very small monitor, they have no Idea how large these animals get and that It is going to cost them as much to feed their "child’s" new acquisition as It cost to feed their own son/daughter a month. For instance, I have seen pics of large adult water monitors that would take 2-3 grown men/women to manage and these young kids think they can "TAME", "FEED", "ALSO DID I SAY FEED" and handle them one day when the monitor reaches adulthood!!!!!!!!!!!LOL, LOL, LOL, EVEN LOUDER LOL!!!!!!!!!!

The worst part about this is the animal suffers greatly, An adult Water, Argus, Nile, Croc and many other species take $100’s a month and constant daily monitoring to make sure it is eating and it’s husbandry is consistent!!!!!!!!!!!

My all time favorite has to be that "My Dad" is really the one who wanted this lizard though and I am just helping, "WELL WHERE IS HE"? If that is the case, AWESOME but that more than likely is just a quick thought out hopefully to help detract from the real issue/perceived attack comment!!!!!!!!

How can I say all these things, well when I was a young-in I would have and did say the same exact things!!!!!!! In reality these kids and their monitors are doing nothing more than learning how to do better with the next monitor because the one they have now is doomed. I say this NOT BECAUSE LACK OF HOPE, DEDICATION OR WANT TO TAKE CARE OF AND HAVE THESE MONITOR’S PROSPER but because of a lack of resources, mainly "MONEY", "THEIR OWN MONEY" to keep these animals going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For you OLDER keepers, what would your parents have said if you needed at minimum $1200 a year TO KEEP YOUR MONITORS FED?????????

Last but not least, the comment well everyone has to start somewhere is just a shortcut to actual thinking!!!!!!!! While everyone does have to start somewhere, when you first get your License, does that mean you get a Ford expedition that is difficult to drive, impossible to parallel park and the biggest gas guzzler of all vehicles. No, absolutely not, you start with a ford escort or the like and no truly informed and participating parent would make a poor choice like that, "IF TRULY INFORMED"!!!!!!!!!

My point, well since this may be on deaf ears there is no point, these kids are going to do what they want and 99 percent of their parents have no Idea but only that it currently fits in a 10 gallon tank. What parent is going to actually say yes son or daughter it is fine that we spend $1000+ dollars to refinish the basement for your monitor lizard and I will take care of the $100+ DOLLARS A MONTH to feed your monitor and by the way that extra large electricity bill and water bill from changing that baby pool twice a day is just fine!!!! LOL, LOL, LOL

I re-read my post about 4 times and thought maybe it was a little harsh but you young-ins are going to and are taking over the hobby/industry and need to realize that keeping a species that you cannot 100% care for on your own and provide for on your own, is not a good idea or RIGHT!!!! Monitors are fascinating but are probably the most demanding and high maintenance animal you can own. Now if any of you young-ins are anything like me when I was young, you will probably discard everything I have said and go right out and get yourself a 50 gallon tank and a Savannah/Nile monitor!!!!!!!!!

Well good luck and I hope you can learn quick and provide for your monitor, I sincerely and truly do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

O’Well, Jason

Yes, there really is no accountability here on these fora. The youngsters and even worse some adults, can paint any picture they wish in order to save face. It’s odd how they are somehow detached from reality here on the internet. Many times it is reflected in the daily life as well. There is not much accountability in general amongst kids these days. They actually become highly offended when they are questioned and presented with valid, realistic advice and observations. Well, what happens when junior decides he’d rather be out with his friends or spend the weekend with his girl rather than clean smelly crap water or remove big nasty turds from the cage. The cage begins to reek and mommy and daddy tell junior to say bye-bye to monitor. It’s also a reflection of how disconnected people in general are when living things have become disposable.

we gotta keep this thread alive for sav season!!! Great thread man, I think the one thing you missed was the fact that large monitor can be pretty long lived if (and thats a big "if") properly cared for. Its incredibly foolish to think a 14 or 15 is in a position to take on a responsibility that could easily span a decade. All of you that are old enough to do so would prolly agree when thinking back to college that it would have been impossible to keep a large monitor, especially considering most college dorms are smaller than an appropriate water monitor enclosure. In order to keep ANY pet i believe stability is paramount, and how stable is a teenagers life? People experience more change in their teenage years than in any other part of life prolly, its an awesome time but its not really reasonable to think a large varanid is a suitable companion for those years. My advice would be to wait until you’re in a place in life where you enjoy some job security, and you can afford to do without 2,000 dolalrs of your income every year (might be an overestimate, but you never know what emergencies might arise) Being a teenager/ young adult is stressful enough, and the chocies you make in this time will determine the course of the rest of your life, its prolly not smart to make it any more difficult than it already is. -Adam

Yes The Dirty Andorian is correct, I’m not sure about the smaller species, but I believe it is not uncommon for large monitors to live well into their twenties and I have heard reports of monitors living beyond the age of thirty. Ten years would be considered pretty short lived. The point of this thread is to attempt to make aware not only the amount of financial and physical support involved with large monitors but also the kind of long term commitment owning them really is. Sadly, I doubt most of the kids that have posted here since I have been a member even still own their savs, niles and waters. Only the older, experienced member have been steady posters here. I can count the kids who have stuck it out with their monitors and still post here on one hand. The thing that really sucks is the fact that odds are in favor of monitors being bounced from home to home, back to petstores and eventually rescues, dont make it to see even five years. In my experience, monitors do not take to these kinds of changes at all.

The fact that i grossly underestimated the life span of larger monitors completely speaks to my point that it is an incredibly long term commitment, and most youngins do not have the years under their belt to even comprehend caring for something that long. Consider the fact that youll be caring for this animal longer than your parents have cared for you, and think how much things have changed for you in the relatively short span of your lives thus far...in the end i think its pretty obvious that for MOST teenagers, its ridiculous to think your ready for a large varanid, or damn near any pet for that matter, instead you guys should focus on school, developing your sense of self, building relationships, and learning values that will carry you through to an age and level of comfort that will allow you to keep all the monitors you want. -Adam

amen slomo, we gotta keep this one goin. Unfortunately its likely that the target audiance isnt trying to hear any of this. Anyone that has read any of my posts know that i am completely in love with albigs and really hope to get a black throat someday. Whenever i mention it to my gf she just smiles and says "go to the zoo if you wanna see big lizards". I got to thinking about it and shes right, and i do go to the zoo and reptile shows w/e possible to satisfy my urge to see big lizards. If i had the time i would volunteer at a zoo or shelter, and i think if a teen really wants a large monitor they might wanna consider doing the same. It seems like a really good way for a teen to really get a feel for the work involved in keeping large monitors, and since most teens refuse to listen to a single thing theyre told, firsthand experience might be the only way for them to really get it. Even a local pet shop that keeps large monitors would probably be stoked if you said you wanted to help clean the cages so that you can learn what it takes to keep a monitor. It might even lead to a job or atleast a good price on supplies if you do decide you can handle the responsibility of keeping a monitor.

One more thing, please dont get ackies as a substitute for large monitors w/o really doing some research first. They may require slightly smaller cages, but they are still a big responsibility and a good deal of work and money is still required to keep them successfully, and there are only a precious few outside of australia, and every one that dies as a result of bad husbandry (cough* mxracer cough*) is a loss for the entire community of dwarf monitor keepers.

just my two cents -Adam

Ive been doing some serious debating and thanks to reading this I’m gonna def wait awhile....

and kids now a days def don’t know what responsibility is, i gave my 16 yr old brother a corn snake and after 2 weeks a took it back cause he would just hangout with friends, i just don’t get kids now a days, they beg and beg until they get what they want and as soon as it gets tough they back out......
