Probobly not needed but im gonna put my 2 cents in. I have two bt’s I do not give mine showers, but I do soak them for 1.5 hours once a week and it makes a huge diff. in shed and proper hydration.

also from personal experiance when i was just getting started in the hobby There is alot more respectful way to give advice then ive seen on this thread, when given respectfuly its better recieved i wish everyone would remember the WAS A TIME WHEN U WERE NOT SO KNOWLADGEABLE.

You’re absolutely right Mojo, but the problem here is that the original poster is unwilling to accept advice from people with longer track records than he has. No one would get on his case if he was more receptive.

Soaks make a difference in dehydrated animals, but albigs don’t soak in the wild, and therefore should not have to soak in captivity unless something is wrong with their environment.

Why should he be receptive to something he doesn’t agree with? Just because you actually believe Albigs hate water and don’t soak in the wild, does not make it true. Both mine do not hate water.
Both mine seem to actually enjoy it. I say ’seem’ because that’s how I interpret their reactions to it. Have you owned Albigs and watched them closely? Even some who have owned them, may not have watched them closely. (not you Chad)

I have to agree with Larry.
I don’t dislike BT, it’s just he doesn’t listen, and doesn’t understand what his animals are telling him.
See att: BT post.

I’ve kept many many albigs, and other non water going Varanids, NONE of them like’d water.

Cheers,
Chad

This reminds me of a person who put their leachies (giant geckos) into a bathtub to soak as if they like to swim. He got ripped apart because of it and this sounds like the same situation. Personally I have been keeping herps for 1 year and I know not to ever put an animal in a shower ...

Sdslancs: I could hold the opinion that Dial liquid soap makes great break fluid. Although many others would disagree with my "opinion". Based on your argument there’s no reason to be receptive if I don’t agree.

If monitors are kept properly, they should not need a soak to help in shedding or proper hydration.

I understand that school of thought. But how many cbb and ltc animals do you see "look" like wild animals? There natural envirenment does not provide most suitable conditions with: at times improper nutrition, hydration, paracites, etc... as a keeper I feel that with the advances of the "hobby" it is my responsability to provide the best possible conditions for my animals. I guess in short im saying just because its not a natural act for a wild animal doesnt mean its not beneficial.
Please take no disrespect, im only voicing my opinion.

It’s fine for you to have an opinion, but consider this:

Why are wild caught monitors so hard to breed in captivity? The sickly, wild monitors you speak of in the wild manage to breed despite all the natural hazards, so what’s the issue? Well, the answer is that it’s extremely difficult for these animals to establish themselves in captivity. Therefore, you shouldn’t make them do things they wouldn’t do in the wild. These animals have a wide range. Plenty of them have access to water, but choose to avoid it, so why then does bathing in captivity make sense?

You would have to prove that to me. Based on my two albig’s likes and dislikes (no forcing here), that story doesn’t hold water. Remember, we’re supposed to be treating them as individuals, and observing their habits/personalities. No one can tell me ’all’ Albigs dislike water. Well, you can tell me, but you’d be wrong;-)

You can put your monitor in the bathtub or shower or whatever you want, and if it is beneficial to the monitor, your husbandry is lacking. If you keep an animal in a cage, shouldn’t you be providing it with everything it needs to be successful in that cage? The bathtub or shower is not part of the cage and therefore your cage is ill equipped to succesfully keep a monitor. If it likes to take a bath, enough water should be in the cage so it can "bathe" as it see’s fit. If you need to take it out of the cage for it to do that, your cage sucks.

I disagree he’d be right in my eye.
If your albigs are soaking/spending a lot of time in/near the water something is off in your cage conditions.

Chad

Again disagreed.

If you put them in a tub of water they’ll blow up like a ballon, and flop around, or ’swim’ and just go crazy.

Put a Nile in Water it dives meaningly, not swell up like a ballon.

Cheers,
Chad

Chad

I put my water in the tub. And I dont think he even likes it. He trys very hard to get out so I do not put him in the bathroom. But I put a big tub in his house and he loves it. I guess its just the security that he gets being in his home other then a place he has never been be4.

Slomo, I seriously doubt if the water has anything to do with it. Id say the alien environment of the bathroom and tub in general is what freaks your water out.

I’m only responding to that, because I never mentioned, nor have I ever put mine in a ’tub of water’ and wouldn’t want someone reading that, to assume I have. They go in and out of their water bowls inside their cages, freely and without fear or apprehension. They also like to fish out small food items from it. And yes, it’s changed often because of that and the dirt they kick into it when digging.
