you have beautiful monitors, i don’t know what you are trying to prove. so are you trying to say everyone should have the same experience’s as you with their monitors? thats what it sounds like. myself and others are loosing a lot of respect for some of you as you can’t wrap around your head that not every monitor acts exactly the same. for as smart as some of you seem to be you wouldn’t think there would be so much ignorance. i guess that is human nature for you though. even though us humans are supposably soo smart I think we are pretty dumb. ok, now get me good and tell me off..

BT,

I’m not in this for your respect or to prove anything. It’s just a hobby that I really enjoy and I try to help if I can. There are folks on this forum, such as Crocdoc, that are true experts. The rest of us are trying our best to share our experiences in an effort to advance the hobby. I’m truly concerned about regulation if this hobby does not start regulating itself. Misinformation hurts all of us.

Thanks for the compliment on the monitors. Sorry, Toki, for taking your thread OT.

well then you need to talk to my monitors for this misinformation because I am not just making this up. I am not trying to give anyone advice but just sharing what i have experienced. once again I said that in my post. this will be the last time i will respond to anyone like this. i am going to keep keeping on and let you guys get butt hurt when you want. have fun with that. no problem on the compliment, you have great monitors and they are lucky to have someone so great to take care of them. no that isn’t sarcasm either. Can you please write a book? thats not sarcasm either. thanks

3240,

You should make a post showing how you built that, (for the newcomers like me). All of those cages and the heat and food etc, you must be a millionaire. When I get older and out of university, I want to build something like that for monitors. I love waters, niles, laces, argus, ackies, and the like. I’ve always wanted to buy one of those steel outdoor buildings and make like a mangrove forest or something like that.

Sorry for going OT, but your cages are amazing!

hey guys
he must be very scared since he spends about 16 hours a day hiding and the other 8 where i am asleep out and about basking and eating. this does not seem like normal monitor behavior to me but i guess its just because hes so stressed. i dont muck with him at all so hpefully all will turn out to be better i worry allot about new animals and dont know if its a bad thing

That’s awesome he ate for you! Honestly, I think it’s normal for now.

Join the club, for ’worrying about your monitor’. My baby BT was pretty much nocturnal when I first got him, as he would wake me up scurrying around his cage, but he’s sorted himself out now. Good luck. I think he’ll be fine.

Kirk - that actually is "normal" monitor behavior for him to come out when you’re not around. He’s smart to have figured you out already, lol. You = danger in his eyes and you have to figure out ways to change his mind. That’s part of the challenge/fun of keeping these animals.

thank you krusty
i was just not used to the nocturnal part when i go to bed my girlfriend is always waking me up telling me what hes doing now since he keeps her up all night. and then ill find him in under one log either by his tail or a claw sticking out. then when i get home from work he is under another or swimming. its pretty fun playing wheres toki when i get home.
ill keep everyone posted he has not ate today hopefully tonight or tomorrow im not in a rush i just want to get him fattened up and a bit bigger for his next cage.
i love the new experience and new challenges and am glad i have a few people i can call on if i need some written help.
thanks again
kirk

Stay with it, no rush. It’ll start coming out during the day once it feels comfortable.
Did you add any leaf litter?
Listening to it rustle around under the leaves will keep your gal awake even more.
Hell, if she can’t sleep, she can wake you up and ummm...... you are over 18 right? hahahaha
Oh, toss some night crawlers in the cage, not only will they help clean, but the critter will gobble them up.

In my opiniom it’s not the large cages being difficult for small monitors, it’s the small monitors in large cages being difficult for the newer keepers. It makes it tougher for someone with already limited understanding of monitor behavior to monitor the monitor.

Quote:

I don’t agree Roger. Trying putting your hatchling Nile in an 8’ cage. You’ll find it’s more difficult to care for. These hatchlings do not use large cages as they much prefer to spend time hiding and eating.

You may be right John as I really wouldn’t know about putting any hatchlings in eight foot cages since I’ve never tried it. When my monitors have reached the two foot mark, I have moved them into eight foot cages or even larger. I simply found it hard to interact with them having so much available space whith which to evade my presence. Since toki has gotten himself the largest species of monitor available on the market it may be to his benefit to do whatever he can to allow his water to become comfortable with his presence.

Quote:

if your monitor is that stressed there is something wrong. i am not the best keeper by far but none of my monitors have been stressed by moves into new enclosures. they eat just fine, act normal and don’t hide. get everything dialed in and you shouldn’t have a stressed monitor. what has caused so much stress for it in the first place?

BtBandit, this is quite a bold statement. You are either full of crap or very lucky. I would have to ask how many monitors you have actually raised from hatchlings or juveniles to adulthood. I’ve moved a few, yes, only a few, monitors to larger cages where everything was "dialed in" as you say, and all, save one, my larger nile went through a period of stress due to the move. Nothing has ever really seemed to stress him, but I know he is an exception to the rule. You ask what has caused so much stress for it in the first place? Um.... how about being yanked from a habitat it is used to and put in another one it is not?
