Thinking of getting emperor scorpion, but i know nothing!

Well, the fighting can cause death, but with emperors it’s usually not the case. They’re considered to be very communal. If they get out of hand for a few days, return the more aggressive one and try again. But remember to be patient because even though they may fight aggressively at first, they also get used to each other.

That half log is pretty large; I don’t think you need to buy another one of it. I would suggest buying a piece of drift wood, makes the tank look more appealing also. I don’t think it’s too late to return it as well to get something smaller if you want.
here’s a good pic of terrarium drift wood: http://akamai.f3images.com/IMD/250/ES68584/ES68584_99.jpg

Sweet, komodo dragons are awesome lizards, my favorites actually.

Dunno i quite like the tank, also makes it ideal for near enough any other pet i might want to have in the future too, yeah ive placed it inside the tank in one of the corners, has about 3 inches from the othercorner space, so its pretty big, that driftwood looks pretty good, think they sell it in there.

Well i dunno then cause i usually work nights and thats when there most active? dont wanna come home one morning and find out ones killed the other, so i might be safe with just the one then? 2 would be nice but with 1 i could easily look after i would think.

Maybe bill will have to cope without ted, or ted without bill. Lol

That XL is pretty large, so you don’t need to buy another. If anything, you should buy a piece of driftwood, something like this: http://akamai.f3images.com/IMD/250/ES68584/ES68584_99.jpg
They look pretty nice too and if the half log is too large, you can also return that and get driftwood

nice scorpion :D and that hide is enormous! What color is the stinger? if it’s the darker red/brown color it’s mature and shouldn’t have anymore molts. If it’s a creamy color it has about 1 molt left. That substrate looks pretty strange, it’s really stringy.
Here’s one of my scorpions and the coco fiber substrate is very fine as you can see:

Here’s another:

The scorpion species is Heterometrus petersii btw.

Thinking of getting emperor scorpion, but i know nothing!

ok your’s are abit bigger than mine lol, and im not totally sure of the colour of the sting as hes hiding atm a few inches deep in the substrate, and yeah it is abit stringy, maybe i should moisten it abit? theres 2 different types in there, like dry wooden bark stuff underneath and the other stuff on the top, i put it on the top cause it seemed more moist when it came out the bag, it has dried off abit now though.

he/she seems to love going round the edge and tapping on the glass over and over, is that normal?

i havent got a thermometer in there, but the hygrometer i have is always close to 70%, at night i let it drop to just above 60ish though, im hoping thats ok, i can see in the corners where he/she has been digging, im pretty sure its female.

the person in the petshop says i shouldnt feed it for a few weeks? at the shop when i got it they said it had just been fed, although i put a cricket in the yesterday, came back and cant appear to find it again, so im guessing its had that too.

cant wait till mine is as big as yours lol

Yeah, mine are full-grown adults. Yeah, maybe water and a little tearing of the substrate will make it less stringy. Just remember that bark chips are bad at holding water, so it’s not good at keeping the humidity high. 70% humidity is fine for them though, just make sure to not put the hygrometer where the moist/wet parts of the tank are, gives it a bad reading.

The scorpion is simply checking out its surroundings and exploring. Mine used to do that for the longest time and it still does. Eventually they pick a hiding spot and make that their home.

Well, crickets are pretty sneaky, try checking the ceiling of the half-log piece. They are always hiding there in my experience, that’s why I pretty much ditched the half-log altogether and just used driftwood. But using driftwood required at least 4 inches of substrate for the scorpion to burrow though.

Well, I wouldn’t go so far as to not feed it for a few weeks, but just drop in a cricket, see if it will eat it within 24 hours and if not, just take it out and try again after a few days or a week.

Thinking of getting emperor scorpion, but i know nothing!

Well them pics i put up if you look at the middle one should see i got the heatmat at the back middle and the hygrometer at back left corner, and yeah that bit of driftwood or whatever it is i have i put like a inch into the substrate, no joke its dug another 3 inches into the substrate and has been buryed in there for about the past 20 hours, aint came out, i would of took the cricket back out but it went down into there and i didnt really want to rip it out to find it, seemed abit rude, so just left it, if its in there its in there sitting next to scorpion lol.

looked under half log isnt there, and yeah i thought it was just looking around, wasnt worried too much, ill try to get a picture of the underside of it cause thats how you tell the sex as far as i know? i went to shop today to get locust but they were sold out :( (it seems to always be sold out of stuff i need lol) cause id have to keep the food in my room, crickets make alot of noise = me no sleep, and seening as i work till early hours of morning then come hope and sleep till mid-day id be annoyed if they didnt let me sleep, like chucking them out the window annoyed lol, the shop guy said to get locust cause they dont make any noise, and where they’re bigger wont need to feed it so much, so might just do that.

few other things im planning to get;

thermometer
spray thing to keep the substrate moist
once cocoa fibre is back in stock i might change the substrate then aswell
locust, will locust actually be ok instead of crickets? just wanna confirm it before i get them lol

but yeah like i said i cant tell you the colour of the sting, but i will as soon as she comes out (like i said pretty sure its a she, and been buryed in substrate for a while lol)

thanks for all your help again, looking back, 40+ posts, probably wouldnt have my scorpion now if it wasnt for your help :D so thanks.

Ya, you look at the underside to tell the sex of the scorp usually. lol crickets can be pretty annoying, any way you can put them outside? a locust seems pretty large for a juvenile scorp. If you feed it a locust, it won’t have to eat for a few weeks after that. I prefer the smaller crix cuz you can feed the scorp more often lol, but locusts are fine.

You don’t need a thermometer really, and i’ve had bad experiences w/ them not working properly, but it wouldn’t hurt I guess. Yeah, I would change the substrate cuz the coco fiber is a lot more appealing to the eye and is much easier to manage, very clean and tidy looking too. The coco fiber also allows the scorpion to dig nice burrows under the driftwood. You can easily spot your prey as well and pick whatever leftovers the scorpion has left behind, making cleanup much easier to avoid mold and such.

haha, no problem. I’m glad to have provided you with the information you needed. The scorpion hobby is on the rise, glad you’re on board! Pretty soon you’ll be getting more species of them haha

Oh yeah i have a seperate container to keep them in, its a few posts up i think with the first few pics of the equipment i had that i posted, its this one:

http://www.888reptiles.co.uk/productdetails.php?ProductID=1891&ProductGroupID=367

but yeah she still hasnt come out under that bit of wood yet, shes come upto the entrance though, cant help but wondering if shes hungry or not, ill try hopefully go to the shop tommorow, they get locust and cocoa fibre back in tommorow, i wanted to get like some sort of plant or something to go in there but not sure if there really is anything suitable, looks abit dark and dull, needs something with abit of colour to lighten it up lol.

i might get crickets then i dunno, feeding is pretty fun lol, but dont worry i wont overfeed :)

she(i think lol) she has finally come out, i think i scared her abit though! she came out, i have a light inside the tank, i turned on, she ran backwards straight back into the bit of wood, i dunno if this confused her with the tank suddenly getting lighter but seemed to be a mistake on my part.

the stinger is like a pale brown colour, like toffee near enough, not sure how to explain, its pale but with a abit of brownish to it, so maybe 1 molt left?

When they’re hungry, they’ll go in a certain pose. Their claws are open and they poke their heads out of their entrances. They will look like they’re in a sort of attack position.
Plants are pretty hard to keep alive in a container. The only plant I would recommend is pothos plants. You’ll have to keep them in a pot w/ potting soil though. Make sure the potting soil doesn’t have any pesticides or fertilizer in it, maybe topsoil will work. Pesticides may kill the scorp. The reason soil is required is because the coco substrate doesn’t have the necessary nutrients for plants to grow and live in. If you can get the coco fiber for the enclosure substrate, you can get enough to bury the pot below substrate level to make it look more natural.
You can also spice things up by adding a background picture, maybe of a forest floor. Some people put up cool rock formations, but be careful the scorp doesn’t get crushed.
Ya, she was definitely afraid of the sudden exposure to light. Their eyes are very sensitive to light except for red.
Your scorpion may have one molt left since it isn’t that large.

Btw, I forgot that roaches can be used as feeders too. They don’t make a sound, live longer than crickets and are pretty hardy.

Well maybe it’ll do without the plant then lol, but yeah maybe sometype of background will be cool, ill look into it, and yeah she was standing at the entrance of that bit of wood in what looked like an attack position so maybe she is hungry, i will try and sort some food out soon.

Also another thing ive noticed her doing, trying alot to climb up the glass, but she will like push herself off the floor with her tail to try get up higher, is that normal? I dunno if its like confusing her not being able to walk through something she can see through or something like that?

yeah, plants are hard to keep alive. I’ve never tried any pothos plants before, but I’ve heard they’re the most successful yet. You can also add a little color by using pots as hides. Those clay pots give a little color or you can use a more colorful one if you can find it. Some people drop them on the ground and get the larger pieces to use as hides.

Yes, it’s normal for the scorp to do that. Pushing with their tail is pretty useful for escaping too. That would be a good guess also, an invisible barrier isn’t something they’d easily get used to lol. I’ve kept mine for a while now and they still haven’t stopped doing that.

Well im gonna go down to the shop tommorow, gonna buy some locust and some cocoa fibre bricks, dont think they sell in bags, so bricks it is lol, need a scoop thing really to get all the other substrate out the enclosure.

She seems to be in her hide alot, im still pretty sure its a she, dunno if you looked at the 2 photos i put up of the sting and the underside of the scorpion, but as far as i can tell going by the pic below is that its a girl:

http://aqua-terra-vita.com/Images/Scorpions/SexingEmperorScorpions.jpg

As the ones underneath on my scorp appear to be fairly small, but im not sure if this might be because my scorp is still fairly small? But i would guess if this photo is accurate at it being a girl.

With locust what should i feed them? Im not an expert on locust but im pretty sure they’re the things that can clean out whole fields of foods? so will they just eat anything? lol, fruit and veg or something like crickets?

I think you can just put the new coco fiber right over the old one, don’t need to take it out unless you really don’t like it.
I forgot to tell you that the images don’t work.
I’ve never dealt with locust feeders before, only caught a wild one and fed it to my scorp. But you can ask the people working there how to care for them. I’m sure they’ll eat fruits and veggies just the same though. Dunno how much room they need though, but yeah, they’re those pesky field destroyers lol

That’s a strange locust you have there. The wild one I caught was brown and had huge wings. It jumped a hell of a lot too. I think the ones at your pet store were specially bred to have no wings at all for easier feeding purposes. They look pretty cool though. I’ll try to post up a pic of the grasshopper I caught later and of my enclosure too.
