 NEW TURTLE, HELP!!

I’m glad you came on here to learn, bu tdon’t argue with the experts...(not me). You obviously can’t own a painted turtle because they need space bigger than you can provide (more than 10 gallons).

Why don’t you let it go from wherever you caught it, or back to the petstore or find someone else who can take care of it. Then, research turtles more, and decide which to get based on what you can provide, and how hard you are willing to work... For example, I chose 3-striped mud turtles or razorback musks caust they don’t require 75 gallons like RES...

Or, since I think you are ne to reptiles all together, choose Leopard Geckos, they can live in a 10 gallon, preferably 20 gallon. They are the easiest reptiles to care for.

 NEW TURTLE, HELP!!

people here have tried to help you but you aren’t taking the help. you are doing what you "think" is right and it isn’t. that is not being responsible. a 20 gallon tank is so cheap its not funny but you insist on saying your bowl is whats best. its not. turtles shouldn’t live in a bowl. you could even go cheaper and get a $5 Rubbermaid from walmart (cheaper then the bowls they sell at petco) and set that up. but no. YOU argue with the ones trying to help you so dont get mad when i say your irresponsible...

turtles are not easy pets to care for.they require a lot of swimming space. i wont even go into how much the proper lighting is going to run you (i spend 50 on my lights)

 NEW TURTLE, HELP!!

and just to add to the post above me....
painted turtles in my oppinion are the most expensive species to care for since they are accomplished swimmers and require TONS of space and VERY DEEP water.

I would say that’s partially right. I would think that a painted turtle is one of the most expensive turtles for its size, but overall. Anyway, someone like that just shouldn’t have anything.

I meant "but NOT overall." This site really needs to let you go back and edit your posts. I’ve noticed that every forum but this one has that option. Is the creator here open to suggestions? And who is it?

yea well my older sister had a turtle to and it was in a bowl too and it lived for 3 years untill she release it!!!!

Not to keep the fight going but do you know that by that time you will have taught the turtle to depend on you for food? Even if it does live that long in a bowl it won’t do well in nature when you release it from that prison. You and your mom stated that you are an animal lover, if you really believe that you love animals then you need to rethink this choice.

Geez guys give this kid a break. I am a kid and well sometimes you don’t think through things. Like not to offend you but Mikeornnta, you said when you were a kid you picked up eastern box turtles and killed some. You’re not alone, see the thing is kids can be uneducated about certain things. Not that I’m calling you dumb. So I say if you want it, you want it! no one can boss around him/her because it’s his/her’s own responsibility to care for the turtle, if it dies he/she will learn something.

Painted turtles are born to be wild, I just keep them in ponds. But yeah, tupperware is good, it’s cheaper. You’ll need a filter, a heater, and a UVB. Those are the basics. Good luck.

 NEW TURTLE, HELP!!

I’m a kid but I’m not stupid enough to keep him in a bowl I try to get him the biggest thing possible to be happy and the only time i took a wild turtle was today and i took it from the city where there is only concrete and put in my yard where there are woods that it can go in and plenty of bushes. The box turtle was also blind with no eyes just indentions. so i probably saved the little guy.

why am i the jack a** ? i know how to care for my pets.

ALL walmarts have them. targets, home depots, you can get them at any place that has rubbermaid’s or storage containers.

and yes YOU will learn if it dies. iv lost a few due to incorrect care when i was younger also. we all make mistakes, but some of us chooses NOT to take advice from people that know.. i on the other hand learned from it and made sure it didn’t happen again. that’s called being responsible!

your name calling shows your ignorance.

grow up

My grandparents raised two turtles in a bowl and they lived for three years until they gave them away.

Seeing as how these turtles can live for decades, I’m not impressed that they lived for three years in a bowl. Three years is a very short life span for these guys and something tells me they died very soon after being released. They came to rely on people for food and were probably incapable of fending for themselves in the wild. So your grandparents (and apparently your) aren’t exactly heroes in my mind. They slowly killed the animals they owned. Not exactly role models. If your mother is monitoring this again, stop buying animals for your child without doing any research. You call yourselves animal lovers but what you’re doing is cruel.
