Please, please, please... if you want to keep it, then make a commitment to the animal & do NOT release it after a couple of years. I know that it wasn’t you, it was your sister, but please remember that turtles can live for a very long time, possibly more than 30 years if properly taken care of. This means that when you graduate, you will still have a turtle. When you go to college, get married, have kids, whatever you choose to do, you will still have a turtle. Don’t expect that there will be someone who will want to take it, there are many many turtles out there who need homes, and releasing it after it has been conditioned to rely on humans is a death sentence. It sounds like you really like animals, and that’s great, just be sure to take this decision seriously.
