I don’t think its fair of you to be judging someones experience when you know nothing about them or how much experience they have.

I don’t really care about "the guy at the zoo" but you just said free handling isn’t smart but yet in 2 posts of yours that i have seen you say that this "experienced guy at the zoo" does it. So what makes this guy at the zoo different from other people that free handle?

ABOUT 43 YEARS, A ZOO, LARGEST COLLECTION OF HOTS ON THE EAST COAST, VERY INTELLIGENT, AWARDS, RECOGNITIONS, SHOWS. I HIGHLY DOUBT ERIC OR WHATEVER HIS NAME IS DOS’NT HAVE A ZOO OR 43 YEARS OR ANYTHING ELSE IN THE LIST. I ALSO KNOW ALOT ABOUT SNAKE BEHAVIOR AND KNOW THAT THE Naja SPIECES IS VERY AGGRESIVE.

whats this guys name that has all these awards and regcognitions ? i have a friend that has kept venomous for over 30 years and had 200 adult breeder venomous at one point he never free handled is that because he was not experienced enough to do it? no its because there is no reason to free handled it doesnt take an experienced person to free handle it takes an experienced person to know not to do it.

The guy I work with has a connection with snakes. He had a 30+ year old cottonmouth and the night before it died he took it off display and put it in its own cage in the back. I do not advocate free handling and I would hate to see this eric person lose his life because he was foolish

It’s a small zoo in Virginia.
They have nowhere near the largest collection of hots on the East Coast. Every small zoo or animal house says they have the largest collection of this or that on this coast or that coast.
I heard they use venomoids in their "freehandling" shows. Even if they don’t, they’re still promoting to young kids that freehandling venomous snakes is okay, regardless of any disclaimer they make during their "shows". Regardless, freehandling is stupid and shouldn’t be done by anyone, even if they have 40 years of experience.

Okay you just made me very angry. They have a huge room in the back with many hots. Nad how dare you accuse them of using venemoids. He said he never promotes venemoids. And he doesnt promote free handling. I voulenteer there and I know that when I own hots I will use hooks and tongs. Have you even been there. They do have one of the largest hot collections in VA. This works for the guy and that dosent mean it will work for anyone else.

Alright Buddy. Than how’d he get envenomated by a copperhead? And yes HE does have the largest hots collection on the east coast. He has over a hundred snakes in the back, you’d know that if you ever got invited back there. I work there. He has NO VENOMOIDS!!! He has been keeping hots since he was 13! They didn’t even do "venomoiding" back then so why would he have venomoids now? He doesn’t have nearly enough money to have venom glands surgicly removed from every snake he free handles. You know nothing about him!

TJP if free handling infront of groups of children is bad then shouldn’t handling them with what kids think of as sticks be bad too? NO, neither one are bad if the handler explains not to try this yourself or tells kids he’s a professional and could or has been bitten then explain that bites "can" kill.

Okay, once again, no he doesn’t have the largest collection on the East Coast....I have friends that keep as many or more than him in their private collections. He MAY have the largest "zoo" collection in Virginia, but not on the East Coast. I don’t need nor want to get invited back there. He’s nothing more than a circus sideshow to me, just like most other free-handlers. I don’t even know why I’m arguing this point with either of you, but apparently I feel like a 12 year old today.

That depends on who you are looking up to as your mentor.... A snake hook is the responsible way of manipulating a venomous animal. The snake, regardless of what the jackass at that zoo says, isn’t more comfortable being free-handled and he doesn’t connect with it. If you follow what that supposed expert says and does, YOU WILL GET BIT!

Go to Luray zoo.com He does have the one of largest hot collections on the east coast. I have been in the back hundreds of hots are back there. His animals have been used by steve irwin. He has manty honors. This is what i always say. people who speak before they see have no right to criticize

Actually my comment that you quoted was refering to you claiming his hots are venomoids. Almost every hot keeper has or will get bitten, once in 43 years. Big deal.

So? What you call responsible handlers use hooks right. So if a little kid were to try using a stick on a snake he saw in the yard he has the same possibility of getting bit as the one who goes out and touches it. Neither child is skilled, same possibility.
He’s not teaching anybody to do what he does what’s your problem? We’re old enough to make our own decisions anyway. I don’t know what you’re getting at. I’m going to use handling equipment but what he does is no one else’s business but his own.

It seems a few people here are star struck over two individuals who free handle. Free handling venomous reptiles isn’t a common practice, but it’s done by a few people for whatever reason. It’s funny that some boast they have the biggest collection of venomous species on the east coast, but I beg to differ. Until now, I’ve never even heard of them or their "zoo".

I just went to the web site for the zoo, and it says, "The zoo boost one of the largest snake collections on the east coast" Key words being ONE OF... Didn’t you say it was the biggest? I know a few collector who have hundreds of snakes. FLvenom has a pretty huge collection going on, but he isn’t going to pull out a black mamba with his hands and show it off...
