so he has a few hundred hots ? my friend had 200 adult breeders and produced 100s of babies a year does that count or does it not cause hes not a zoo ? a large collection doesnt mean anything

what would you rather have the little kids that see the show try to copy ( which most kids do no matter how much you tell them not to) a person using a hook or his hands, not a hard pick if you ask me. i dont get the point of freehandling not sure if its to show how tough the person is or not, kind of a big risk to take just to try and show off.

and the whole thing about him not having venomoids im not to sure what he has since i never heard of his zoo but on this link the pic of her holding the snake by her face would be kinda dumb to do that with a venomous snake wouldnt you think? 40 years experience is great but doesnt mean freehandling is any less stupid just my 2 cents

according to you he has "more hots than the about five buildings full of hots."? wasnt it "a huge room in the back with many hots." on the last page?

I want to clear a few things up.

1) Free handling does not prove you are a man or tough
2) This was not meant as scientific research
3) I could care less who has the largest collection and or what they do with them.
4) I also could care less what anyone thinks of my little project if you haven’t noticed my lack on interest in defending myself or this thread.
5) I know how moronic this project is/was I was the first to state this fact.
6) I’m not a thrill seeker and have nothing to prove I simple love my snakes and was experimenting a little.

I respect the opinions of a few of the people that replied to this thread and would like to say I agree and my free handling days are done. I am not sorry I posted this info nor am I sorry for the experience. We live, we learn, and we constantly take unnecessary risks if we didn’t the world would be a boring place.

You two guys can’t keep a story straight. I know that most of you guys getting started idolize your teach/mentors, but come on... Do either of you actually work there?

It’s cool the people that know me and have worked with my snakes and myself know I’m no fool. I am more cautious than most when it comes to care, husbandry, and yes even handling. I get a little risky from time to time but by no means do I make light of the situation.

"I know that most of you guys getting started idolize your teach/mentors, but come on... Do either of you actually work there?"

That’s the key right there. Both are young, probably never worked with any hots, and are enamored by this moron, much like people are enamored with Ray and David.

"You are awefully arrogant for someone who isn’t nearly in the same class as Mark. I say its jealousy."
I wouldn’t call it arrogant, I would call it right. There’s a difference. I’m the type of guy that’s going to keep some child from getting bit, while the moron you volunteer for will get them bit. I don’t want to be in that class, so you are right about that part. Jealous? Umm, hardly.

So? What you call responsible handlers use hooks right. So if a little kid were to try using a stick on a snake he saw in the yard he has the same possibility of getting bit as the one who goes out and touches it.
A little kid shouldn’t be using ANYTHING on a venomous snake he found in his yard, PERIOD.

He’s not teaching anybody to do what he does what’s your problem? We’re old enough to make our own decisions anyway.
If he’s freehandling in front of impressionable CHILDREN, he’s teaching them. If he was truly a professsional, he’d know that, and the fact that you two keep defending him keeps proving my point.
No, you aren’t old enough to make your own decisions, regardless of how much you think you know or how mature you think you are. You’ll find that out when you get bit and your parents lose their house because they can’t pay for the bill that the insurance won’t cover.

"SO TJP, WHAT HAVE YOU WORKED WITH?"
I don’t mess with venomous snakes, too dangerous.

"TJP, when we hitting Costa Rica again?!"
Next April or May. Get the twins and Jeff to go, see if Harris is in, and Bree will be coming along.
I’m jonesin’ and need an asper fix or two. Plus, I still need to get a bunch of venom samples for that study. He’s waiting patiently for them. I wish I could hit Guatemala with you guys, but it’s just not in the cards this year. I’m way busy and have about a week left of vacation.
I’ll be back down to Florida in September, though, and probably November. So, Osceola is on the priority list. Even one or two cottonmouth is better than nothin’.

what do you do at this zoo that you work at becuase volunteering at a zoo and cleaning up fecal matter doesnt mean you know alot about hots neither does reading about them on the internet and you can be the most cautious guy in the world with all aspects of care for a venomous snake that doesnt mean you wont get tagged even when not attempting to free handle an ELAPID its a stupid idea for any reason

I’m not knocking you for volunteering. It’s a great thing to do, that will get you some good experience, and some good leads in the future. I had an internship myself, but was at a fish hatchery and not a zoo.
The work you’re doing cleaning cages is typical of what one does when they intern or volunteer, and is what you’ll be doing as a keeper or zoologist. Just because I think the guy you work for is an idiot doesn’t mean I think what you’re doing is bad.

no shame in shovelin sh.. its a great way to get experience and cleaning non venomous snake cages and thawing mice is also a great way to build seniority but it doesnt exactly pre-pare you for the real thing you can read all you want about handeling techniques but it wont mentally be the same thing

If you’re working for a zoo, you’ll never get to the real thing without doing the dirty work first. It’s a prereq for anywhere. Even many hotkeepers who are helping people log hours toward certain permits will make them clean their cages, change water, and feed their animals. Housing and care are just as important as safe and proper handling. The difference is, one will kill the animal, while the other will kill you.

im not downplaying the danger of agkistrodon but when your outside and get a bad vibe from a snake you can put it down and be ok (hopefully) as well as the comforting feeling knowing if you get bit by a wild snake its most likely a defensive strike which has a much higher percentage of a dry bite ( fangs still hurt though ) and you probably have the AV within fifty miles BUT something a little more exotic and probably toxic being in your home where dropping it may endanger everyone else in the house as well as yourself and getting bit probably means a quick trip to miami will really put things in perspective

" You can say what ever you want now but your credibility is banished. "

Is it now? Why is that? Because you’re not very perceptive? Why don’t you go ahead and search through a few hundred of my posts? Or even scroll through some of the recent ones? Reading is fundamental you know? But absorbing and acknowledging is key. I’m not here to prove my credibility to a few stubborn kids who feel they know everything about the game because they can spout of a few snakes in Latin. I don’t need to. If one wants to take my advice or information I share off my own beats, they can. That’s the whole point. If not, it’s no big deal to me. For every stubborn know it all that can’t be taught, there are hundreds that can be. And, I’ll be right here willing to help them out and give them any viable information I have.

And what point would that be? Noone else seems to know what it is, aside from the stubborn few of you that somehow feel they know more than the people who have been keeping and handling hots for longer than you’ve been alive. YOU kids will never be the future of herpetology. You know why? Because you have one tracked minds, are unwilling to listen and learn, and will more than likely allow what little "expertise" you have get you into trouble by doing something stupid.
To be frank, there really isn’t any point for you kids to even be on this or any other forum. You’ve not added one single bit of informative info aside from proving you have a complex because you are kids. And you’ve proven that that is exactly what you are, a bunch of little kids. I’ve seen little brats like you come and go, and I’ve also seen mature kids willing learn and become great keepers and handlers. You kids will never be those people. THEY are the future, NOT a bunch of snot nosed brats who do nothing but whine and argue about how they are mature, and have infinite knowledge.
Argue all you want and try getting your point acrossed, you’ve already proven otherwise by simply registering and posting a bunch of useless arguments. I’m not the one who needs to prove my credibility, I proved that a long time ago while you 3 were hiding your baby teeth under your pillows, as has many others in this forum. And, by the way, Santa Claus isn’t real. Now grow up and let the adults go back to exchanging USEFUL information about what they’ve done for many years.
