I have a question for Snakeman24. What good is it going to do you that you can "FIRE OFF" Latin names if you have a cobra in front of you? Are you going to amaze him by your verbal skills and get him back into his cage? You have no idea about the people you are saying have no creditability... i think that goes for certain kids too,

like someone said knowing latin names when handling a cobra wont get you far, i believe that experience is alot better then what you get from reading a book. of course knowing latin names doesnt hurt but to tell someone that you know more about keeping snakes because you can post some latin names doesnt make you look like someone i would call for advise.

most kids get made that adults treat them like kids, but when you act like one expect to be treated like one. you go off and tell people that you know so much more about keeping snakes when the people you are saying it to was keeping them before you where born, common sence would tell you that they have more experience with it.

this post is not to any one person. never hurts to admit you dont know something.

heres a perfect example when my cousin an i were younger we absorbed chimmed in when we knew we were right an didnt go around spouting like everyone else was beneath us (my cousin just bought a brand new audi selling boas) but when he made his first trip to daytona and talked to all the marquee breeders they were shocked he was 17, i shouldnt know your a kid based on your posts calling people names is beyond childish

I don’t have the time to read this entire thread, but this is not ground breaking news here. We have some old photos in a herp society bulletin of people free handling seemingly calm cobras and vipers.

For the record, cobras that are hooded are not calmed down and you are only manipulating their behavior to keep your chances of getting bit a little lower.

The article we have has some ladies with big eastern diamondbacks over their shoulders. Sure the snakes can be calmed down...but it is with a lot of risks we don’t really need to do.

Since we have people reading this who are probably raising hell and are freaked out but not saying anything...and we will hear from them only in big news...I will silence myself now and not give them too much fuel to work with lol.

Just know its been done so make sure to thank your predecessors when you publish your experiment : )

LoL oh my god, this thread was entertaining. Although I think this is serious, I just cant help but laugh at TJP. Not in a disrespectful way, in the way that your completely right. I’m pretty young, and I’ve been the kid at the show that no one takes seriously. The only way to get around that is to learn from experienced keepers, and show them respect. The kid arguing in this post will never get any further than hiding behind his computer acting like hes smarter than everyone. I would almost bet he has never even met anyone at that zoo, and probably never even been there. We’ve all seen it before. People think because they are on the internet they can bullsh%t people into thinking they are professional keepers. Guess what kid, experienced keepers see through your crap...

And, its VENOMOID....how can you insult people when you cant even spell?

How dumb would I look if I was sitting here saying "you stoopid kids, you don’t no wut your tawlking about." When you take the hobby seriously kid, people will take you seriously...

Great looking cobras! I dont think free handling is very smart i.m.o. But Ive seen numerous people do it. Ive seen young guys buy venomous at shows for there first snake. But its there lives and if they want to risk it then go for it. I dont have a ton of venomous experience I have moved copperheads and water moccasins and pygmy rattlesnakes off the roads around here and I have owned two copperheads one for about a year and half and the other for about 6 months. And Ive never actually touched either one of them. They have trap boxes and anytime Ive had to move them around or take them to the vet Ive always used my hooks to move them from tub to tub or anything like that. I know there not the deadliest snakes in the world but I still would not want to take a hit from one.

But with that said after you keep a certain snake for a period of time you do get a feel for them and understand there behavior. I have a reticulated python here that is very pushy. I can hold her fine without being bitten but I have handled her so long Ive gotten a feel for her. My wife on the other hand gets her out and gets bitten. I am alot more confortable with my copperhead Ive had over a year shes not as flighty on a hook as my other one but I still dont think I could bring myself to free handle her. But again thats just my opinion. I thank you guys that keep cobras and gaboons are amazing and I hope someday I will feel experienced enough to be able to keep a cobra and gaboon. They are amazing animals!

interesting. Now for an experiment as to why the mentality of hots is so different than non venmomous, because regular handling of most viscious non hot snakes will usually lead to a calm snake.
