Monitors (Nov 23, 2012) frozen Crickets?
When I feed live crickets or roaches I normally tong feed anyways so I think it’s just as good to tong feed F/T crickets as long as there is no issue with the nutritional value. I’ve started throwing the F/T crickets all over the enclosure to allow her to scavenge and enrich her day which is fun to watch.

Monitors (Sep 24, 2012) Large quantity frozen feeders
Does anyone know of the closest frozen mice seller to me? I live in Portland Oregon. All the ones I’m finding have shipping charges of around same price as food. My local pet store can do 100 mice for 80 bucks. If anyone knows of cheaper I’d appreciate it. Large mice btw

There is a company that sells frozen roaches, never tried them though.

I seen that. frozen day old chicks are very cheap. The feed and seed place here wants 4 dollars a piece for live. It’s not the frozen rodent price but the shipping that kills the deal for me

[BR] Now just because the article about preservatives in frozen fish and seafood is published on the Exanthematicus site does not mean that phosphates are any safer for other animals.
[BR]
[BR] I have lost snakes that eat fish from feeding them frozen salmon dosed in that junk. Even stopped buying canned dog food for my dogs that contain that ingredient.

Monitors (Sep 23, 2012) Lethargic monitor, starting to get seriously discouraged. At my wit’s end here.
What is the ambient air temperatures in the coolest part of the enclosure?
[BR]
[BR] What is your substrate temperature?
[BR]
[BR] And a word of caution concerning any frozen seafood items. Virtually all of it is treated with Sodium Tripolyphosphate, this "preservative" is the primary ingredient in dish washing powder, laundry soap and car wash fluid. You will find it listed on the ingredients of seafood medley and shrimp/frozen fish.
[BR]
[BR] It is advisable to only purchase Certified Chemical free organic seafood. It’s expensive, but well worth it.

Monitors (Dec 08, 2012) How much food does a juvie eat in a week?
Thanks for the ideas.I bought some bait shrimp, they are whole, head, tail, guts.I wasnt sure if he would eat them but he ate three and a hopper(all frozen thawed). The petstore was out of mice and I had to get hoppers.
[BR]I can order crickets but they seem so tiny, like us eating peanuts. I was worried they would eat like several hundren a day but 50 isnt so bad.I think I can keep up with that. But I am seriously going to have to start breeding mice again..I used to have a billion cornsnakes but sold them all off several years ago I also bred my own mice then.I have to say Im pretty darn good at breeding mice. Not so great a breeding cornsnakes.

Once upon a time, I would order 800-1000 at a time from rodent pro, but since that disease scare, prices for the rodents have doubled and tripled.
[BR]
[BR] Now I just breed my own, it’s by far the cheapest way to go.

Monitors (Jan 15, 2013) Ackie Monitor diets?
You don’t have to feed any monitor "live" food.
[BR]
[BR] However, chasing and hunting insects is vital for mental stimulation.
[BR]
[BR] You can feed thawed out frozen rodents, but please don’t even consider feeding canned stuff at all.

Monitors (Jan 15, 2013) Ackie Monitor diets?
You don’t need to feed "live" rodents. You can feed frozen, thawed rodents. But you should include LIVE insects in the diet like crickets and roaches. That way they have something to hunt down. Also, don’t feed canned food nor any of those commercially prepared diets. No ground meat either. Stick to whole prey.

Monitors (Nov 23, 2012) frozen Crickets?
I haven’t noticed any kind of sludge. I have a little fish tackle container that I fit about a weeks worth in to thaw and the rest stay in the freezer. They are just are squishy as they were before I froze them but there’s no bug juice on the outside of them. Whenever I have bought the 3/4" crickets they just seemed so small. Is there any reason not to feed frozen other than it being gross to mess with (Which so far I haven’t noticed)?

Clearly you don’t understand Thiaminase. Also keeping in mind, many of these people on this forum are not up to par on Varanid husbandry so some care should be taken when saying to avoid fish with high Thiaminase levels.
[BR]
[BR]Outside this I’ve fed fish with high levels of it, but I think most of keepers feed enough variety of over set any issues with it. It also depends if the fish is frozen or not.
[BR]
[BR]As an Thamnophis nut, and ex keeper, I’ve fed "high Thiaminase" fish to them for extended periods of time without a single issue. Though I did switch most of my animals to rodents without issue too. I also kept them setup more like lizards than most people do. Anyway’s that’s besides the point.
[BR]
[BR]I was yawning about all the BS you wrote, not about the Thiaminase issue which I believe is less of an issue than previous thought, and even proven by keepers like myself, and Justin.

Monitors (Sep 24, 2012) Large quantity frozen feeders
When I had my two savs I would order 1000 each of quail, chicks and mice at a time. It would last me for about a year as I also fed roaches with those. RodentPro is who I always ordered from, they pack them really well and they came still frozen rock solid in tons of dry ice. I live in Houston TX and when it hits 100+ in the summer and they are still frozen solid after I came home from work at 10 pm I was very happy. If Dex makes it I’ll order again from them.
