Bearded Dragon Community (Jul 09, 2009)  Anyone looking for a good deal on roaches??
You should put 2 male discoids with a female dubia... or 2 male dubia with a female discoid and see if you can get them to hybridize... that would be sick lol. You can market your own species of roach and sell them for like double the price for no other reason other than they are cool and no one else has them haha. I don’t know if thats even possible, but it sounds like it would be cool. I put in a bunch of adult discoids with my adult dubia and nothing happened... no deaths or anything. The dubia still bred, and they kinda just kept doing the same thing. Yea, the water crystals are a live and learn thing... just add like 3 times as much water as crystals and it will soak up in like 10 min, then just keep adding more until they wont soak up anymore... they will take in a crazy amount of water.

Bearded Dragon Community (May 19, 2009)  QUESTION!!!!!!
Mulberry farms is great. Ive ordered from them a bunch of times. I get my hornworms and silkies there. I haven’t ordered in a while cause I have roaches now, but I tried to order some silkworms there a few weeks ago and all they had were smalls. The smalls are REALLY small, so if you do get them, you will need to order some of the silkworm food, and have a make a little habitat for them out of a rubbermaid bin to keep them alive long enough to get big enough to feed.

You should just buy a bunch and breed them... it will take a little while to get going, and until they get established you will still have to buy food anyways, but once they get going... you will be set. You will never have to buy food again. Thats the way to go. There are many people on here who breed their own crickets, roaches, or silkies, super worms, or any combination or even all of them at the same time. Most of the setups are very simple, and doesn’t require much work, especially roaches (probably the easiest...).

It is also better cause you know where your food is coming from. You can control the environment and the cleanliness, so there is less risk of parasites passed on through your insects (especially crickets from petco and petsmart and such lol). You can also order crickets online for SOOO much cheaper than you buy them for at petco or whatever. You can get like 1000 for under $20. Its always better to buy in bulk. You can even just get like 500 for like $15 or so.

Ann you are NOT a breeder, you take in unwanted pets. You have not been breeding dragons for years. And believe me we’ve seen you make a alot of mistakes around here and don’t always do the best thing for the animals you take in, we’ve seen you take it reptiles when you didn’t even know what it was and stuff you had no clue how to care for. I didn’t need you coming in a telling me how to care for my dragons or not to hatch them.

First of all, I don’t sell babies till I get them eating greens and know they are healthy. This will be the first time I’ve ever had to ship out babies before 6-7 weeks old and what I’m doing is for their own good, I don’t have enough roaches to feed them so them going to a better home right now is best. I’m not a newbie breeder. And I’m sure alot of breeders that have been doing this for 20 years have had to do the same thing and send them out before they were 6 weeks old, it happens and sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do. I’ve never had a dragon die.

AND I’m not breeding them, they breed almost 6 months ago and just still laying eggs from that one breeding and NO I won’t throw their fertile eggs out the door I’m not that kind of person, and if hatching them and then trading them for roaches is gonna help all my reptiles then that’s what I’m going to do, there are people out there who want babies that have extra roaches to trade or give away.

And not all of us are kids living at home without 15 Bills to pay so yeah they are kinda expensive when you only get 1,000 for $300 I need alot and no don’t have that kind of money or I’d just keep spending loads on 1,000’s of crickets a week.

Now I’m done with this back to poor DragonKeeper, yes I sure will get you pics asap.
I don’t know what would be fair, we can work something out. We used to sell these guys for $100 but dropped the price down to $40 each since we had so many and need them gone soon and need the roaches. The others are gone, will have more ready in a month about 20 more babies so looking for home for them now.

Thanks DragonKeeper

Amanda
I used to have around 10,000 extra roaches but as I said we lost them so we are in trouble and spend way too much on crickets.
Maybe some of you missed this part ....they had a mis hap ... they lost there stock .... a dramatic event occurred....

Bearded Dragon Community (May 26, 2009)  ? about roaches??
So my roaches are already reproducing at a rabid rate!

I’m wondering how you guys handle feeding? It’s such a pain to like, remove one at a time to put in the feeding cage, takes forever!

I’d like to know if you guys have tricks for removing the smaller juveniles for feeding...I don’t want my bigger beardies eating the adult breeders and I don’t want my smaller beardies getting impacted eating food that’s too big.

Edel,
I too received my roaches, thank you SOOO much! I’ll have to put a divider between the roaches and my beardie’s cage, lol, she’s going crazy staring at them even though I already gave her some : )

I’m hoping to hold off feeding too many until they start producing babies.

Again, thank you so much for sending them to me! My rescues will definitely appreciate the good grub :P

Bearded Dragon Community (Jul 12, 2009)  About how much should a healthy BD weigh?
Zeke still only picks at salads and I feed him crickets every other day. Maybe if I fed him silkies or roaches he would fatten up. but since he is healthy, I am not going to worry about it. I am assuming then, that people are measuring from the tip of the tail to the tip of the snout. right?

Also, i was assured my beardie can have roaches or silk worms as a staple diet starting from now at 9wks old.

So if i cant get silkies i’ll get the dub.roaches.

We just had a nice clutch of babies hatch and needing roaches, is there anyone with alot of extra roaches who are wanting dragons? They will be bright orange, yellow, and also have some hints of red in them. If you have roaches and are interested let me know I have pics of them. We need them out soon cause we are almost out of roaches, so any help would be great.

I’ll check back soon..

Thanks guys..

what are the temps? also, make sure that he doesn’t get impacted from licking the calcisand. will he eat crickets? It’s okay for superworms , but I am not sure that they are the best for a staple diet. It is always good to vary the diet with either crickets, silk worms or roaches. does he eat the salads? what greens are you offering. Squash is good for them as well. Are you using vitamins/calcium?Any idea how old he is? Weight or length? Patience is the key so he can learn to trust you.

Thank you both VERY much, that’s what I’ve been trying to get across! I’ve stated it many times, when we started we HAD way over more roaches then we ever needed but something went wrong and we lost the colony!

YES we could throw all the fertile eggs out and I did try to but the thought of them being fertile and thinking I was gonna kill babies forming in the eggs I just can’t do it. And as I said before if letting them hatch and trading them for roaches will help me get going again, then I see nothing wrong with it.

So thank you guys for understanding.. And we do buy crickets they are not going hungry! I’m just saying 5,000 crickets every week and a half is draining our money fast!

Amanda

So if anyone can help please let me know..

So here he is! This is Suge (as in Suge Knight). He is about 2 years old only 14"... so he is really small. He’s cool though, very active and alert. He ate like 10 medium size dusted roaches and like 5 supers, no greens yet though... we’ll work on the. He came with an 80gal enclosure... this thing is monstrous! He aslo came with a BUNCH of other stuff. I got my UTH for my roach bin lol! He had 2 of them attached to this tank for some reason. He also gave me his UVB (T-Rex Active UV), and hood that holds 2 incandescent bulbs which is nice. Lots of plants and wood. This tank, if you can see the silicone lines on the right side, had a divider in it, and he had FISH in there too with a little waterfall and a filter lol. It had like a little pond... it was pretty sweet actually, but I took it out. If I ever use the tank for something else I can put it back in though. He actually GAVE me the beardie and the setup... he was like "do you just want to keep him, "and I was like...uhh...sure, I guess" lol. So thats it... Im really stoked to have the little guy... or girl... I havn’t checked yet, I will in a sec though. Oh, he also had sand in it but I just put newspaper in... seems to be

Heres the tank:
